When your computer is switched on, the WiFi radio is almost always transmitting or receiving signals. In certain situations, as in an airplane, signals from the radio may cause interference. Use the following methods if you need to disable the radio and use your notebook without emitting radio signals.
Use the Optional Computer Radio On or Off Switch

If your computer has an external switch installed, use it to switch the WiFi radio on or off. See the computer manufacturer for more information about this switch. If you have Intel® PROSet/Wireless installed, the current state of the radio displays in the Intel PROSet/Wireless main window and on the Taskbar.

Use Intel PROSet/Wireless to Switch the WiFi Radio On or Off

From Intel PROSet/Wireless, the WiFi radio can be switched on or off. The status icon on Intel PROSet/Wireless displays the current state of the radio.

To start Intel® PROSet/Wireless, use one of the following methods:

  • Click Start > Programs > Intel PROSet Wireless > WiFi Connection Utility.
  • Right-click the Taskbar icon wireless adapter radio - prosettaskbaricon1.jpg located in the lower right corner of your Windows* Desktop to open the Taskbar menu. Click Configure WiFi.
  • Double-click the Taskbar icon to open Intel PROSet/Wireless.
Switch the WiFi Radio On or Off from the Taskbar Icon

To switch the WiFi radio on or off, click the Taskbar icon and select WiFi On or WiFi Off.

How to use the Device Manager to Disable the WiFi Radio

The WiFi radio can be disabled (made non-functional) from the Windows* Device Manager.

Note: If you disabled the WiFi radio from Windows*, then you must use Windows to turn the radio on. You cannot use a hardware switch or Intel PROSet/Wireless to enable the radio again.

Windows* XP
  1. From your desktop, right-click My Computer.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. Click Hardware.

Wireless radio on Lenovo Y510 turned off even though the slider switch is switched on and lights up. How can I turn on wireless radio?

Hi There and Welcome to Fixya!

Another way to turn on the wireless radio on your Lenovo Y510 is to press and hold the "Fn" key, then simultaneously press the "F5" key.

This is an alternative way to switch the wireless antenna on or off without using the physical WIFI switch.

Hope this helps,

Thank you for using FixYa.

Cannot turn on wireless radio on Lenovo Idealpad

Press FN+F5 button together on the keyboard to have the settings for display pops up on the screen. Check if the radio button was turned on both for wireless and bluetooth connection. If the radio button was off, just click ON and that should set the wifi to turned on. Always make sure that the wifi switch was set to on as well.

If this didn't fix the problem, kindly reinstall the wifi adapter driver by downloading the driver from the manufacturer's website. after reinstallation kindly reboot the computer.

Please leave comments if you have any other questions.

Cheers~

Where is the wireless radio button on an old HP Pavillion 8705? I just installed a usb wireless adapter and now I'm running the Linksys Add a computer to your wireless network wizard, but the message tells...

On desktops, that's usually software controlled, not via a button.
nce you have the right software installed for the usb adapter for your operating system, there should be an icon in the system tray where you can activate the wireless feature.
I stress for your operating system because I had to get a new adapter once because i couldn't find vista or windows 7 drivers for my old adapter which I used with windows xp.
