If the operating system can't format the hard drive then the chances are that the drive is either failing or Failed.

SOURCE: Sata Hard Drive not detected on Bios

I would tend to agree that if the ports are set to autodetect it would suggest that they are looking for drives, but go through every item in your bios just to make sure that there isn't some obscure spot where the port is turned off.

If your bios is not detecting a drive your o/s is not going to find it either, and Linux will likely have the driver it needs when you go to load it. What's more, if it doesn't, you're rather hosed until it does.

If everything looks right after checking and rechecking and sleeping on it and checking again, but your bios still won't find the drive, take the drive back and get it replaced.

Hello there DLBurkhart.

Here's your geek-steer ...

"...is emitting strange whining sounds every now and then ... Is this strange noise a sign of an impending problem?" == EVERY strange HDD noise is ALWAYS a sign of impending failure.

Peform a "Check Disk" on it ...

chkdsk DRIVE_LETTER /X /R

  • There should be NO surface errors if it's new(er).
  • Regardless, if it's new, then immediately insist upon a replacement.
Good luck, and please do post back ...

Can you look in the bios and see if your motherboard is configured to use your SATA drives in AHCI mode or to emulate IDE mode?

HOW CAN I SET IT TO SATA 1.5 ? mY MOTHERBOARD COES NOT SUPPORT HDD WITH SATA 3.0 !

It should be backwards compatable
but it might be that you have to switch a jumper. instructions for this should have come with the hardrive itself but if not check this out

Hitachi Deskstar - Model HDP725050GLA360 Sata 3.0 500 GB S/N RJ3KSXHE Clicking sound after being dropped. Is there any hope of recovering the data on this drive at a reasonable price?

if the hard disk has crashed and the sound when it runs later he failed to be detected by the system, it is difficult to restore the data in it because it was not detected by the computer. The cheapest way is that you replace with only secondhand.

I am assuming that this is the hard drive in the computer. Try a safe boot up to see if you can get to the hard drive. use the F8 key at startup for safe mode.
