I recently purchased an acer travelmate 8204 when in the usa and had it shipped home to the uk. The security smartcard function was not operating so i downloaded the drivers from acers site and installed, all seemed fine when initiallising the two cards but when i boot the laptop up it asks for a card as it should but then sits on a black screen checking the card but does nothing else and of course this now prevents me from entering the bios too! I can never get through to the acer helpline so wondered if anyone has had this prob or any ideas, thanks.

Most Acers use an IPN2220 Wireless card. If yours does and your router is using WPA or WPA2 (TKIP or AES) security then you'll need to update the driver by searching for it manually using the Custom button (Hardware) in Windows update (instead of Express). This driver is not part of XP service pack 2 or 3. In my experience if you don't update to the newest common form of home wireless security (WPA2 AES) then the older formats seem to become unreliable in the way you describe
the only repair centres are in uk that give you the turn your laptop arround in the time you need
if you type in laptop repair centres in search browser and you get all repair centres listed.
I've hunted for 20-30 mins on repairs to laptops in USA but not much available on your laptop model.
good luck on finding a service centre for your laptop
