Hi - my Amana washer (about 10 yrs old?) is depositing brownish oily "goo" on my clothes. I ran an empty cycle just with some washing soda to clear the lines, but am still getting the "goo" - there is evidence of this stuff seeping trough the holes in the base of the tub. I am suspecting a leaking seal somewhere in the motor or pump? Is it fixable? Cost effective? Any ideas wil be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Hi there. I had a similar problem I think with my washing machine. Check the seal on the door. I found brown marks on my clothes but it wasn't from inside the machine but from when I took the clothes out and they rubbed on the rubber seal around the opening which had browny stuff on it. I just made sure to carefully remove my clothes without touching the seal until I got a new machine. Not sure if this is helpful but I hope so!
You've most likely got a top transmission seal leaking. It can be fixed, but requires quite a bit of disassembly and some special tools to remove the agitator, tub, and basket. Probably at least $125 job for an independent repairman, more for a factory repairman.
There's also a possibility that a bad top transmission bearing/bushing is what caused the seal to start leaking. If that's the case, the repair becomes almost prohibitively expensive on a 10-year-old washer, but there's almost no way to tell till the repairman tears it down.
So you have a cost/benefit analysis to make. Is it worth $150 to repair a washer that's worth $75 after you fix it, but which might give you another 10 years of service. It's up to you, but you might also consider that newer machines also have better features, like water saving cycles and improved cleaning cycles.
Ann, these Amana's are the mother of all washers to change out the seal and bearings. It's possible you just have a lot of gunk built up on the inside of the basket from years of washing. I would not put a cent into it. You are better off getting a new direct drive washer. Catriver...post back.
