What happens when you push the big blue-light button for 5 seconds, is that all router security is turned off for 2 minutes. While it does this to give you 2 minutes to complete the WPS setup of a device with the router, that's not what you're doing. You're just providing totally insecure public access to your router for 2 minutes at a time.

The bad news is that now, WPS is now enabled on your router, until you reset the router to factory settings, and then restore whatever settings you care about back to how you had them. With WPS enabled, any nearby hacker can figure out your router PIN within a few hours (anytime, not just during the 2 minute windows) if they want to, through a well-known attack method exploiting WPS PIN/SSID/etc handling.

What you really should do is either: provide your guests the password to get connected securely to your router/network (and change the password after they leave), or just remove security for however long you want to for them, then secure it again after they leave.

If you regularly have guests who you don't trust with the password to get onto your secure network, you should set up an additional unsecured guest network. Some routers have this feature built in.

SOURCE: will pressing the wireless button and wps button

Well pressing the two buttons together for around 5 seconds would cause the router to revert to factory default settings and that will reset the password and IP address.

Please revert for any further clarification.

Why did the router ID change when I linked it via the Wps button to the DSTV wifi gadget ?

Here's and excerpt from the Netgear WNR2000 user manual explaining that this is normal behavior for Netgear routers that support WPS..:
  • Keep Existing Wireless Settings. This check box is automatically selected after WPS is enabled to prevent unwanted settings changes, and is also selected if you have already specified wireless security settings or your SSID without using WPS. When this check box is not selected, adding a new wireless client using the push button or the Add WPS Client screen (see "Push Button Configuration" on page 2-14) changes the router's SSID and security passphrase. You might need to clear it if you are using certain registrars, such as for a Windows Vista PC, to configure the router through WPS.
Even if your router is not a WNR2000, it is likely that the configuration interface pretty much the same so you might be helped by looking at Chapter 2 page 17 in the WNR2000 manual here..:
Or else, go to Netgear support (NETGEAR Support Welcome), select Wi-Fi routers and download/display the user manual pdf and search it for "disable router's pin" or "keep existing wireless settings" and verify/change the setting so the router doesn't make changes when you use the WPS button.

Windows problems connecting to WPS enabled routers

You may come across connection problems when routers have Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) enabled and clients do not support it.

In Windows XP, Wireless Zero Configuration (WZC) may mistake a WPS enabled router for a WPA-Radius protected one and warn you that there is no certificate to connect to it:

To work around this problem, you can either disable 802.1x authentication on the client or disable WPS on the router's.

802.1x on the client can be disabled in the properties of the wireless network. On the Authentication tab, untick the 802.1x Authentication option. Make sure that the correct encryption type is selected on the Association tab and that the WPA Pre-Shared Key or the WEP key is entered.

On Windows Vista things may even be worse. When you try to connect to a WPS enabled network, Vista may prompt you for a user name, password and domain name as if PEAP authentication were used. When you manually create the network profile specifying WPA2-PSK, AES and the Pre-shared Key, Vista may refuse to connect stating that the network profile does not match the actual configuration. The only work-around in this case is to disable WPS on the router.

To disable WPS on the router, go to the Wi-Fi Protected Setup.
To learn how to disable WPS click here...
At the top of the page, just set WPS to disabled and apply changes. You may need to delete the profile for the network on the client card before it can connect to the router.

Locate WPS button on FWAG114

Thanks for posting to Fixya!

According to the manual I found at the following link;
http://downloadcenter.netgear.com/en/product/FWAG114

www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ffqvIoxcOc

WPS is not supported on this router. However, my suggestion would be to reset the WN2500 to default with the reset and start fresh, using the manual setup. You can find the help you need here;

How do I find wps button on Netgear WNR834B

The Netgear WNR834B does not support WiFi Protected Setup (WPS).

You can follow the documentation in the manual to setup WPA-PSK (Pre-Shared Key) and use the key to add devices to your wireless network.

I got a Netgear WNCE2001 today. My router is a Verizon router. (The one with the WPS button on the front.) The security password is in WEP. When I try to connect it with WPS, the light on the WNCE2001 just...

which light is blinking ?

may be this help you ?
2. Select a radio button.
• Push and Connect (recommended). Either click the button or press the WPS
button on the rear panel of the Internet adapter.
• PIN Number. Select the radio button and a PIN displays.
The Internet adapter tries to join the wireless network for 2 minutes if you are using Push
'N' Connect, or 4 minutes if you are using a PIN.
3. Go to the router.
• If you are using Push 'N' Connect, press the router's WPS button.
• If you are using a PIN, log in to the router and type the PIN from your Internet adapter
in its WPS screen.
4. Go back to the computer that is connected to the Internet adapter, and make sure that you
are connected to the wireless network.
• When WPS is running, the WLAN LED blinks, alternating between green and amber.
• If the computer does not to connect with WPS, the WLAN LED is solid red for 5
seconds.
• If the computer does connect using WPS, the WLAN LED is solid green for 5 seconds
Then the WLAN LED returns to indicating a wireless signal.

Wps light is out and emails not coming

Is there a way to get the light to turn off, and the WPS to be disabled by actually just pressing the button in some manner I am not doing?

If this is the normal functioning of the router, does Netgear plan on providing a way to just flat out disable WPS in a future firmware upgrade?

This router blows away my previous Linksys wrt54gl and Asus routers. I would like to keep it, but with the constant traffic which I have near me, I really need some way to turn the WPS off and keep it off.
