Question about Frigidaire FRS23H5AS Side by Side Refrigerator
The column/divider between the freezer and refrigerator sides is hot to the touch on the front. This is getting so hot, the magnets in the weatherstripping on the doors are getting hot, too. I am worried the whole thing is about to crash on us, fully loaded with food. We do need to change the filter, the light has been on for a couple weeks. What runs through the center colunm/divider?
The light for the filter is not a problem. The thing to check is that the fan in the back is running. It should run any time the compressor is running to cool the compressor. If it is, then you need to pull the front grille or toe kick off and look under the fridge. Is there a lot of dust and dirt blocking the airflow? If so, vacuum it out. If not, pull the fridge out and check behind it. Is there a grate clogged up with dust? The reason the divider gets hot is because there is a freon line running through that part of the fridge to keep moisture from forming around the door seals. If the fridge is not cooling properly (dead fan motor or dirt blocked airflow) then the freon in this line gets very hot and all the pressures in the system rise, eventually leading to the fridge not cooling. Good Luck !

My side by side divider/column was getting really hot to the touch. The freezer temp was at 8 degrees and climbing. Vacuumed the front grill but not much space to clean. Pulled out the refrigerator and there was all this lint clogging the grill where the compressor and fan was. Took the grill off and clean compressor, and the whole area was dirty. Before moving it back i checked the temp. and had begun to come down and the hot spot was not hot anymore. I will mark on my calendar to make it routine to clean it Spring and Fall. After all it's been 4 yrs. since I got it and my fear was scratching the wood floor under it so i procrastinated finally the husband gave me a hand with it. Thanks for having this info available. It saved me some money$$$.

I confirmed the fan explanation. When I took the back off to check the fan, there was a small mouse jammed in the fan blades. Once this was removed, the fan ran fine, and in an hour or so, the temps went back to normal. This is an Electrolux Icon model. Works great.

Side by side divider was getting "VERY HOT". After reading all the postings from this web site, I was almost positive it was the mother board. But not taking a chance I call GE, who sent out a repair man. Sure enough, it was the mother board. Repair man said that it could only be one of three thing wrong. 1). Something is jamming the fan from spinning (like a mouse). 2). The fan motor (which he said, these motors never break). 3). The mother board is bad (which was the case with me). Repair man said of the many repairs of this nature its almost always the mother board. He has yet had to replace a fan motor. Mother boards are easy to replace and come with instructions. So save yourself a ton of money and buy and install the board yourself. My repair bill was over $400. The mother board will cost you approx. $140.00. Good luck

I was amazed at the accuracy of Solution #5. There was a red backed vole, the size of a small mouse, stuck in our fan. That makes our refrigerator a very expensive mouse trap. They should engineer a little hole for mice to get past the baffle holding the fan.

Thank you so much for this assistance. We didn't know where to turn and sure enough our fan was not running.

Pull the refrig out and remove the rear panel . Check that the fan , cooling the compressor is working . Replace the fan motor , if there is nothing caught in the fan blade , and it is not running .
