The washing machine has a grinding / squeeking sound during the wash cycle? One time the machine stoped during the wash cycle and we got an F5 error code. We just started it over and from then on the clothes are coming out clean and all cycles complete, but I am afraid the sound may progress into something more serious. should I take some steps to fix the grinding / squeeking sound?
I have the same washer. Over the past weeks I have had all sorts of error codes. In no particular order, I've had: CA, CI, ld, ob, and SL. Had a repair guy come out and put in a new pump. Didn't solve the problem. Had a more experienced guy come out from the same company. We basically tore the thing apart. We found an underwire from one of my wife's bras (she wondered where it went) along with a bunch of lint in the recirculation tube. You can see the outlet of the tube at the top back of the drum. We also found one of her small booty socks inside the tub blocking the drain tube. We fished everything out and it works great again. I have a two foot long cable grabber that we needed to get the sock out of the tub. You'd be amazed at where things can get trapped in these things. So, I spent $230 or so for a pump that I probably didn't need, but the new pump design is vastly superior to the old one so I'm not complaining too much. The company didn't charge me for the repeat visits, which was nice because the senior repair guy was at my house for about four hours at the end of his day. So the more experience guy and I brainstormed about why all the different error codes came on and this is what we came up with.
CA and CI -- These are current fault codes. Either the average draw or and instantaneous draw tripped a set maximum. These were likely caused by the pump trying too hard to pump thru the blockage in the drain line.
ld -- This stands for long drain. The pump must be able to drain the water form the tub within a certain time frame, if not, you will get this error code. Again, likely came from the sock blocking the drain tube. This may have also came on because the washer recirculates the water throught its cycle. With the recycle tube clogged by the underwire and lint, the only place for the water to go was out the drain. With that being clogged as well, the ld code comes on at the beginning of the cycle.
ob -- stands for out of balance. This one confused me a bit, because I was getting an out of balance signal with nothing in the washer. Apparently, with too much water in the tub and the thing sloshing around, an ob signal is very common with the drain clogged.
SL -- is for suds lock. You can get this one if you put too much soap in the thing. It can also come if you use conventional soap instead of high effencicy soap. I only got this one once. This message can also be caused by a faulty pump.
Hope this helps anyone with these problems. I wouldn't have wanted to tackle this one myself, but probably could do it now after helping with the repair last night. I know these machines have a bad reputation, and I wouldn't buy one of these again, but when its working, my wife and I think it does a good job washing our clothes.

My Whirlpool Calypso washer started showing LD and ob. At first I could get the machine to finish the cycle. Then it escalated to the point that it would not drain at all and I was getting LD and SL. My husband and I took the drain hose off and cleaned it. Then we took the short black and yellow hoses off the washer pump and cleaned them. The curious thing was the pump was pumping so hard that the short black hose was actually collapsing. I finally called a repair company that we had used before. The technician worked like crazy and finally told me that I needed a new washer pump. Repair would be $350.I had been reading your site and I had asked him to check for debris under the steel basket. He said that he didn't need to do that, that I needed a new pump. This seems to be a common fix to a problem. After he left, I researched some more, because I didn't think the pump was broken( I had removed it and checked inside-no debris). So I took off the nuater(agitator) and looked inside. 3 underwire bra wires and a huge clump of debris. Machine drains like a dream and no problems! I think that the easy fix is to replace the pump on machines that don't drain instead of checking for other possible blockages. What 's happened to repair men!Now we have technicians that don't check for mechanical issues.

How old is this product? I have a friend who is an authorized whirlpool servicer, and they won't even work on them. Supposedly they are a bear to take apart, and have a very bad tendancy to flood. Check into it, but he tells me there is a class action lawsuit against whirlpool for these. This is 3rd hand information, so you will need to verify if this is true or not.

The closest I can get to an F5 error code is a FL or SL code. There is no F5 error code in the manual. FL meaning the pressure switch tripped too soon and SL is suds lock, meaning too much detergent. The sqeaking sounds is probabley the U-joint which sits under the wash-plate. They have revised this U-joint with a new kit. They also updated the software in the control board to eliminate the 30 second fluff at the end of the wash. Complaints were grey marks on the clothes caused by this fluffing. Depending on the age of your washer, these upgrades may be covered by the manufacturer. You would need to call Whirlpool. Catriver..post back.

I have the same machine. It is the worst washing machine I've ever had. It was suppose to be energy efficient & and save on water too. There is nothing efficient about this machine. False advertising & misrepresentation! I can't believe they are still being sold. Someone needs to warn the public!!! Sign me up for that lawsuit.

I have a whirlpool calypso washing machine. It has been sooo
sorry. It has eaten my towels and other things. When I say eaten...it has pulled the threads out into the little holes which are in the bottom of machine. Also my clothes do not come out smelling fresh. This machine should be recalled and money given back..If there is a law suit I sure as heck want in on it..

I have had this washer for about 8 years and I have hated it for all 8! A service person came out at least 3 times while it was still under warranty and told me the repair people call it the CALAPSO. I spent about $1300 just for the washer. My Husband has repaired it more times than I can remember. I get a horrible rotten egg smell from this washer, today I got a CA code, LD code, OB code and SL. Guess it's time to rip it apart again. I will never by a washer when it is still new on the market, the only reason I bought this one is because Good Housekeeping gave the matching dryer the highest marks out of all the dryers they tested. Too bad they didn't test the piece of **** washer that went with it. BTW, the washer I replaced is now 25 years old and guess what? It still works.

I have the same washer!!!! Our repairman says they are the worst machines they ever made. Have all sorts of errors, codes...all the time. I will use it until it blows up, and then call my repair guy, and ASK him what kind of washing machine he has. This is a real piece of garbage. Very dissappointed in this washer. (the matching dryer had to have a heating element replaced right after the warranty expired.) They sure don't make em like they used to. *sigh

i bought whirlpool washing machine last august.since then it is troubling with heavy sound and vibration thru out the washing time. servive people has changed the motor and still the problem persist. i bought it in M/s BAJAJ ELECTRONICS, HYDERABAD A.P. INDIA. kindly help me
My washer was working fine today. All of a sudden on my third load, it started making a grinding noise, similar to that of a key being made at the hardware store. I canceled the cycle and tried other cycles, but it makes the grinding sound no matter what I do. The machine still appears to be agitating. What could be wrong with it???
I purchased the Kenmore Calypso, which is made by Whirlpool and it is a piece of junk. I purchased it in 2004, and last year 2008 it broke down. It took three visits from three different technicians to repair it and I was warned that the machine is only good for about 4 years. Even after the repairs, it never worked properly. In January 2009, it broke again with the same problems, I've opted to buy a new machine. I will never buy a Whirlpool again.
I love my Calypso washer and dryer. After 5 years, I have noticed some noise during the ash cycle. After reading, I will call a repair guy and not try to fix it myslef.
I had the same problem as KendelBiz. Yes, it was an underwire and yes it clogged up the recirculation tube.
I get the grinding noise, but didn't know what to make of it. Along with a hot or heated odor, I thought it was the pump motor bearings going out or something like that. I never considered the transmission u-joint. Since the tub will not drain, but the clothes still get moved around, I will assume that the drain pump should be replaced. While I am doing that, is there anything else I should consider doing? The washer is less than three years old. Should I have a service man from Kenmore come out and update the software for the control board or do anything else that might be covered under the five year warranty?
