No picture When I turned on the television, it made a popping sound, then just a thin line in the middle of the screen. I could smell burning plastic or something after this happened. Sound is fine. Thanks, Mountain Man

The thin line means you have no vertical sweep. the popping sound was the vertical capacitor(s) or the vertical driver IC blowing up. this happens sometimes out of the blue and almost always when you first turn on the TV set. if you cam solder, Get a schematic diagram, then you should be able to trace out the curcuit and replace the defective parts. If you have no solid state repair experience, you really should take the set into a shop or have someone estimate the set for you. If you do have any repair experience, and can send me a schematic of the circuit I will be more then happy to assist you find out what the problem is.

I turned my television on then it made the tv frame made a noise!and now the screen is black except for this thin line across the middle of the screen which is display the picture

Most likely the vertical oscillator circuit has failed. As CRT televisions have gone the way of the dinosaur, my advice to you is to give a fond adieu and invest in a new TV.

Sounds like the picture tubes are failing, common on sony. do you notice any thin horizontal lines? You mite get lucky and be able to adjust the voltages. Remove back cover and look inside to see which tubes are lighting up.The front panel below the screen will come off and behind it is a small access cover.remove it. there you will find the voltage controls (its a plastic square with 6 knobs). 2 knobs for each tube, 1 is focus the other is the voltage labeled "screen". they are marked so look closely. Green is always in the middle but sometimes they flip the controls for red and blue so pay attention to which you are controlling .slowly adjust screen voltages to see if you can get it to stay on. If you over do it those thin horizontal lines will pop up and the tv will shut off again. If you already have lines back off the voltage by turning knob to the left slowly until they diappear. If that seems to fix it but the problem but it comes back later, then the tubes are shot. good luck!

First there was a burning smell, then the picture was very dim.. Now no picture at all, just multi colored vertical lines, with a small spot that has a web like look to it. Does this sound repairable? or...

Hi
This is more than likely your screen controller board that has gone faulty, if the lines cover the screen vertically and are very thin and rainbow kind of coulored then i would say 98% this is the faulty board, Remove the back from your tv and look for a little board (rectangular in shape) that connects to your screen. (Middle top)
Get the part number of the board and Google or Ebay for a replacement.
Hope this helps

No picture, perfect sound, burning smell

I assume this is an LCD tv that you have? I would think a fault has developed on your inverter board with one of the components having burnt out & shutting off the drive to the backlights hence the smell & lines on the picture. It would be advisible to take it to a repair centre to have it repaired to check the burning issue as a matter of safety

Toshiba 36A50 sound, light line horizonally on black screen

It is my guess that you have some intermitent solder connections in the Vertical output circuit.

I have a Sony KP-57WS500 and there are arched, thin, and horizontal lines that appear.  Where could I find agreen picture tube or can I adjust the voltage myself?

Remove the front speaker grill and you will find an access panel (2 screws are hidden behind 2 little plastic caps at very bottom of speaker grill, just pop uot to access screws) .Remove the panel and you will see the picture tubes. In the middle you will see a little black control pack with 6 little knobs. The 2 in the middle are the green controls. They will be labled screen and focus. You will have to look hard for which is which. There may be glue over the controls if so just remove it.Slightly rock the screen control back and forth to adjust retrace lines out.If the unit shuts down during this process back it off a little and turn the set back on and proceed.

POP and noothiing

yes it can still be fixed! the pop sound you've heard maybe came from a blown capacitor in the vertical deflection circuits. this symptom, sometimes called the tube light effect, it is characterised by a bright thin horizontal line across the middle of the screen. this symptom is caused by a breakdown in the vertical deflection circuit. hence maybe the trouble maybe in the vertical oscillator, amplifier or output circuits. but if all i have said is not clear to you, better bring it to a qualified tv technician. good luck!
