SOURCE: hoover steamvac brushes don't spin

my husband took it apart today and the impellers were gunked up with black stuff.

he used these pictures that someone else generously posted. ours was slightly different in internal design, but they are helpful regardless.

here is an exploded diagram of the 5903, 04, etc. it will help you see if any parts are missing or broken.

parts list if you need some:

it's working fine now. sucks much better too. what a difference!

guess for the $179 these things avg, they just need annual maintenance. I wouldn't pay someone to do it though.

if after you cleaned the brushes and still doesn't work. it will have to be the turbine assembly that the brushes fit into.

The bearings in the turbine that turns the brushes are very cheap. They rust and seize. Sometimes they can be greased and reused. If the corrosion is too bad the turbine has to be replaced.

I have the Hoover, self propelled vacuum. I have only used the self propel function a few times, but our babysitter used the feature and now the vacuum only works on the highest carpet setting. The middle...

Move the carpet height control switch to a higher position if the vacuum is difficult to push. If the setting is too low for the carpet being cleaned, the brushes press against the floor preventing the vacuum from moving easily.Set to a medium-high height setting then check.Slide the "Self-Propel" button to the "ON" position if the cleaner does not self-propel. -----------
The self-propel feature operates only when the cleaner switch and the self propel button are both ON. ---------- Try this settings and check. This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Brush is not engaging when vacuuming. If lifted

therre are usually aprings that hold the brush in position or a spacer thaqt turns when you adjust the height. turn the vacuum over and remove the plate covering verything. make sure your unplugged first. it usually takes about 5-6 phillips head screws. look for loose ,broken or missing parts. make the the roller is taken out and is carefully cleaned of all hair etc esp that just at the edge of the roller where it meets the monting devices. the hair and debris often gets stuck there and once removed works much better. also make sure the belt is not stretched and is slipping on the brush. if it is replace it. good luck.carefully reassemle the parts you removed being very aware of what postiotn everything was in when you took it apart. make sure everything has proper clearance and then test your vacuum. if you find broken or missing parts replace them first ofcoarse.

Brushes won't turn

Look at the ends of your brushes were the brush piece attaches to the vacuum. Sometimes they are broken or just stuck. good luck

Brushes stopped

Most likely the turbine is bad, it may just be clogged up, you can take it apart and clean it out real good. That may work, but it may not. Sometimes it is best to replace the turbine.

Hoover carpet cleaner

Take the brush block out, is the shaft that goes up into the turbine there, or is it broken off. If gone, then replace the brush block. If there, then probably the turbine isn't working, this is what drives the brushs. It may be just clogged up, you can remove the turbine, take it apart and clean it out real good and put it back together. If it works, then you are set, if not, then it will have to be replaced.

Spin brush not working anymore.

Is the shaft still on the brush block, if it broke off, then replace the block. if it is ok, then the turbine(#13) is most likely the problem. It is what drives the brushs. You may be able to take the turbine apart and clean it, if that doesn't work the replace it.
