Camera just stopped working

Hi! I was using the camera one moment (with lens fully extended) and it just turned off. The lens is stuck out. I have not been able to turn it on since. I have tried charging the battery, changing the memory card, plugging into the computer. Nothing seems to work. The LCD screen is black - there is no sign of life at all! I have had this camera since December 2002. Can anyone help or suggest a solution? I have investigated costs of repair and GBP138 seems a lot to pay- probably more than the camera is worth now! Thank you for your help!

I have 2 different Coolpix cameras that have the same exact problem. I initially thought I got sand IN it, but the same thing happened to the other a few months later. I tried contacting Nikon, but never received a response. Did you ever find a fix for this?

Same problem yes, was making pictures and camera just stopped with the lens out. Camera is from 2004.

This happened about 1 year ago, and since then many times we take the camera again, in the hope it might work again, charged battery again and again, but no life since......

How do you fix a stuck lens that will not retract when camera is turned off?

Hello, Remove batteries from camera, try pushing the lens back GENTLY with the palm of your hand, Notice I said "GENTLY" or you will cause more damage than good. If this won't work than take it for service / repair.

Hi,

Is the lens totally stuck? Does it even move a little? Did you try to power cycle the camera?

Hi, My Kodak EasyShare C613 intermittently starts up ok, but other times the lens extends and the viewfinder stays on the initial screen. (The Kodak EasyShare system 'share') After around 40 seconds...

My camera is stuck on the screen that says "lens error" and then has four different numbers in a row. The camera lens is fully extended and will not shut off...any suggestions of what the problem could be?

Lens error message on nikon coolpix L18 I purchased my Nikon L18 Cool Pix camera last September ('08). Last week when I turned it on, the lens extended fully, then retracted fully as I got a "lens error"...

Hi,
When system control does not get lens initialize signal while extending it, then it try again by folding it and extending and still no required initialize signal then generate error and stop further functions.

Please remove battery and open camera and remove flexible wire of lens mechanism from connector, there would be lock that needs to release to remove flexible wire. Clean wire terminals with alcohol, let it dry and put back flexible wire in connector and lock it. Now put battery and power camera up, hopefully lens will work properly.

Thanks.

Cannon G7 need help

Hi
Had the same problem a few months ago. There was a high pitchedwhisltle and I think the screen said "lens fault.turn off camera" or something similar.Bought a G9 to replace as the 7 was out of guarantee but sent the 9 back to the e-bay reseller as it was obviously secondhand with grit around the lens ring and the viewfinder.Ebay never again!.So 3 months ago ago I tried the G7 again with a fresh charged battery before I consigned the camera to the loft.I noticed that each time i switched on the whistle and message was there but the lens extended slightly further each timeso I kept rebooting until the lens was fully extended.Turned the camera off and on again and everything was back to normal. It seems that this may be Canons protocol when a camera goes back. Its been absolutely fine until today. It wont boot up at all.I have tried 2 fresh charged batteries and its dead.Any ideas anyone?

Lens cover jamming

Try blowing lots of compressed air around the open lens shutter to clean the mechanism. Or use a hair dryer for a few seconds (don't want to heat up the camera). Also with the lens barrel extended and pointed downward, tap the lens barrel with a pencil while you extend and retract the lens by powering the camera on and off. A grain of sand in the mechanism is usually the culprit, and you want to try to dislodge it.

You can open it up, but only as a very last resort. The above procedures usually work if you try them enough. But for those particularly nasty stuck mechanisms, here's an example repair on a Canon Powershot A400 (do this at your own risk, and it will void your warranty):
