Maximizing life of external HD

I use these 250 Gig drives to archive photos and only need to access them once or twice a month. What is the on/off cycle life rating of these drives? That is, how many on/off cycles are these rated for? If left running constantly, what is their expected/rated runtime life? My reason for asking is that many suggest leaving externals run all the time and I'm just curious to know if, in MY case, they will last longer if I only turn them on as needed (about 2 times a month) or leave them running all the time.

Keeping hard drives running will cost more on electric and heat generated from drives as I've found out on of my 160gig sata drives burnt out because I was using pc 24hrs aday and night if I had put a cooler on the bottom it would have lasted 5 years but I only lasted 8 months you can give your hard drives 2 twice or even 5 times life span if kept at room temperature listen to you own advice it's your data and hard drives do what you wish I'm only her for advive you can tak itor leave it

File size limit for Buffalo HD 250 GB Hard Drive backup

The file is too large meaning that the size of that SINGLE file is too large. Your hard disk is probably formatted to a FAT32 file system, this results in a maximum of 4gb PER FILE maximum transfer. What you could do is archive it into a few parts using winrar and then moving it onto the disk, and when you need the file just extract the archive. Your problem isn't the total free space, it's the size of that file chunk.

Simpletech 500 GB external hard drive - unresponsive

If you really can not get it to work anymore, you could try opening it up and connecting the hdd directly on a IDE/SATA port in your computer. This will only work if you have a desktop, for a laptop you would need all kinds of converters.

Upgrading from 250 gig hard to a 500 gig hard and says mismatch. my first hard drive is dead

hi pete,

changing the bios will do the trick, find one that is most compatible with aspire 1640 for a 500gig hd, once you have this replaced, it will work.

Simple tech 500 gig external drive

the interface has gone out, these portable drive are horrible i have 2 go bad withing months of each other.

theres not much you can do beside taking out the drive and buying another enclosure and putting it in the drive in that enclosure.

so replacing the enclosure is the only option, since the device is out of warranty. just pry open the enclosure and remove the HD, and then buy another enclosure, add the HD to it. the problem is solved.
