There is a part number which you can use to order, so it can be replaced.
Part #: 103336
This article describes how to replace the device. Replacing the optical drive is on page 3.

My first test would be to determine if the blank DVD is faulty. Try using a different brand of DVD and see if you get the same error. My experience tells me that your combo drive is faulty however. It is possible for a combo drive to read a CD but not a DVD. I would replace the combo drive with a DVD writer as they are not too expensive.
the lens is gone bad in the drive... you can replace the lens but it costs more and also will not be worth...it will play for another 3 months and will give the same problem...for replacing the lens you wll spend Rs.600, but a new player you can bought for Rs.1000 so my advice is to better go and buy a new player with atleast an year of warranty and use it completely for one year...
Any 5 1/4 DVD / CD drive will work. You may have to order drive rails depending on the setup of Gateways tower. You should have 2 - 5.25" Drive Bays available. The original model number and name for the DVD drive is 5648 DVD Burner Combo Drive .
The tower does have internal SATA so you can replace it with any internal SATA DVD rom you like, it doesnt have to be Gateway, and it can even be blu-ray.
Hi Imran, Sadly this is a fairly common problem with combo drives. In all likelihood, it will cost you more to have the drive repaired than to replace it. I will suggest purchasing a dvd writer to replace the combo drive. They are fairly inexpensive. Regards, Graemevm
Hi, First i need you to make sure that both the BIOS and the WINDOWS is detecting your drive as 'combo' drive. If not, your drive is not combo, it is CD drive only. Because both rely on the product ID that is built into the Drive.
If u are confirmed of the fact that your drive is COMBO, then the problem might be with the laser. Combo drives use separate laser beams for DVD and CD operations, and
it's possible for one (either one) to fail while the other is still
working. But it's more common for the DVD to fail while the CD still works. You need to contact the service center with your drive ,if that is the case. Hope my info is useful. Bye....
