Sony 53" XBR

We purchased it in the early 1990's when the Good Guys was still around. A few months ago our Sony began to have yellow and blue ghosts around the images on the right side of TV. Now the picture appears to have a problem, where it bows on top and bottom, and both sides. With this everything is obviously blurry. Is this a fixable problem, and is it worth the fix? Please let me know, and thank you for your opinion. If its time to move on then what is recommended? Not too savvy yet on different tv's: Digital vs. HDTV, LCD, DTV, or anything else out there. I read somewhere that HDTV is part of DTV and new sets are DTV ready after 7/1/06 in US. But if this is true then why do we have to pay more on cable bill for HD if they are the ones changing this.

Have you tried adjusting teh convergence using the remote control? See the owners manual. Appears you might need to align 2 of the 3 color guns (usually blue and red) to the cross hatch pattern.

GHOSTING

Hey joseph, actually replacing the optical Block is not necessary at all, all you need to do is get into the "Service Mode" of the Tv and change a few setting around, did it a few weeks ago and now my TV looks perfect, no reason to waster $1200 as sony is trying to get over on all us consumers.

KP-53S65 Blue Ghosting

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer2_bing.gif Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2
Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture
