Bad Drum? I have a Brother MFC-8440 Copier. I may have left the Drum out in direct light too long while I was cleaning out the machine. After re-assembly, the first page prints fine but if I print multiple pages, by about the fourth page, the pages become progressively blotchy until they become so blackened you can't see the text. If I let the machine rest for a short period of time, and print, again, only the first couple of pages print fine. Could I have ruined my Drum by leaving it in direct light? Thanks, Phil

Yes, printer drums work under photoelectric rules and any exposure to light can affect their performance.

How do I clean the drum on the Brother MFC-8440

It should be constantly cleaned by it's cleaning blade with every revolution. If that's not making continuous contact inside the drum unit, then it's time to replace the drum. The symptom to look for is not just a gray background, but images that repeat about 3 inches down the page as the drum rolls around to that point again.
If the background is gray without noticeable repeating image, it may be a defective toner cartridge. We've wasted a fair amount of money replacing Brother drums when it turned out to be the much cheaper toner cartridge. If it's a new cartridge, take it back to the store along with before and after print samples.

I have a Brother MFC 8440..the paper has vertical black lines

Try changing the toner, if it's generic that's your problem, and if it's either an old brother drum or a generic you may need a new one. There is also a glass to clean, it's right above where the drum sits inside, 1/2 inch wide across the top. Wipe with a dry cloth.

I have a Brother mfc-8440. It prints light on the

Usually when it prints light on one side and normal on the other, it's either the drum (which you replaced) a dirty corona wire, or the toner is unevenly distributed in the cartridge. You can removed the toner cartridge and gently drop it from a distance of about 4-5 inches to dislodge any caked up toner. This is normal in a cartridge that has sat a while or if the fax machine is in a room with high humidity.
Hope this answers your question and best of luck.

I have a brother MFC 8440

Have you checked the back paper door?, the paper tray?, and the drum/toner unit? If a paper was torn out of the machine, you may not be able to see the piece that is still triggering the jam signal. You can also pull down the paper guide around the orange fuser roller through the back door by pulling it gently to the left.

Pls Clean Drum

The drum is the larger plastic unit that slides out an the toner cartridge fits into it. The corona wire is the very fine wire at the front top of the drum. Just slide the little cleaning tab back and forth.
