I found a really tiny Philips screw driver - unscrewed the case, removed the long plastic label from top and undid clips underneath the label. Took it apart - looked at it in depair and put it all back together again - and the lens slid back in . It is now working perfectly!! You only risk this sort of action as a last resort.

System error

Hi,
This error usually comes due to faulty sliding mechanism.Put a bit of force on the focusing lens to push it back into camera casing. That's the reason the sliding mechanism won't work. The lens is stuck and if you force it back in, the sliding mechanism will work again. Not responsible if your camera screws up, so try at your own risk.

Or else try out this method

Pull the lens fully out and then it will work.It will be bit tricky to get the lens out. Use your nail to "grab" between the outer glass and the little plastic cover.

Thank you !!

Lens error nikon coolpix 4300

This error occurs if camera is turned on before lens cap is removed. If you are removing the lens cap before turning the camera on and still getting this message, camera should be serviced by a qualified technician.

Hi - I found this info on the Nikon Australia website:

"System Error" or "Lens Error" message in LCD monitor trnsp.gif Question My COOLPIX camera displays a "System Error" or "Lens Error" message. What should I do? trnsp.gif Answer Having a "System Error" or "Lens Error" message displayed on the camera's LCD monitor would generally indicate that your camera needs servicing. A System Error is a general error which can be caused by many things: lens problem, CF Card problem, general camera failure, etc. To troubleshoot, please try the following:
  1. Use the memory card that originally came with your camera (or a Nikon approved card).
  2. Remove and replace the battery.
On the other hand, a Lens Error generally means that an error has occured during the lens operation. To troubleshoot, please try the following:
  1. Turn off the camera.
  2. Remove and replace the battery.
  3. Turn on the camera.
If the above tips do not help, your camera must be sent to our Nikon Authorised Service Centres, there are no user serviceable parts in our Nikon COOLPIX cameras. We apologize for any inconvenience caused and we will do everything to repair your Nikon camera as quickly as possible. Click Here for our Nikon Authorised Service Centres details.

Sort of like a Windows Restart to reset the memory.

Hope this helps.

Seems you may just have to remove and replace the battery - sort of like a Windows Restart to fix a computer problem! - this would reset your camera's memory.

Hope this helps.

Lcd reads system error

Apparently often related to a lens motor malfunction. My old 4300 just gave this error for the first time today. The lens extended but made a whirring noise before the message popped up. Nothing I tried would fix it - but after I drove home it worked fine again.

I had a similar problem over a year ago after the camera fell out of my backpack (it was in its own bag but not well padded). When I used it the lens stuck and refused to retract, but I don't recall a "System Error" message. After a few tries, the lens went in and it's been fine since, until today.

Make sure there's nothing (dust, dirt) stuck in the lens barrels. Otherwise, just keep turning it on and off and hope it works.
