My printer(HP LaserJet II P) is already defaulted to the computer. When I do a test print, no response is coming from the printer.Instead, the computer replied"printer is out of paper" even though I already placed some paper beforehand. The screen indicator in the printer display a message "12 open or no EP".What does this mean? My computer is an HP Vectra with an MS Windows XP Professional version 2002 Service Pack 2 operating system. Please help me.Thanks//Gene

Hi,
May be cable loose or heavy dust available in printer that`s why your printer not proper response it. Or may be printer main board damage position so i suggest you contact it printer technician or checking it, which area damage.
Most probably due to overheating. Or maybe it is placed jn a damp area. Or due to internal laser heating element which is responsible for drying out the printed ink. Or other reason can be your system printer settings. Try them restoring to default first.
Since you can print the TEST page, that indicates there is communication between computer and printer.
Each program/software on your computer such as Micro Soft Office and others need to be TOLD to use the specific printer.
Two things to look at:
1. Left click Windows START button 2. Left click Control Panel 3. Look for PRINTERS and select 4. Find your printer and make sure it has a GREEN check mark next to it (Default) 5. Then use one of your programs and try to PRINT 6. May have to tell your program to select AND print to specific printer
Thank you for contacting FixYa with your inquiry.
This printer can work very well via a standard printer cable directly connected to your computers LPT Terminal. Most of Microsoft's current Operating Systems already have the LaserJet J2300 drivers built in and will automatically install when connected.
To confirm your connection to go to your computers printer setup and ensure the driver is configured to print from LPT1 port and click on print a test page. (Start/Settings/Printers/LJ2300 - Right Click on properties then click on the tab for ports. The general tab should have a button to print test page)
The network card that comes with your printer (Jet Direct Card) will not be used with this method nor will the Ethernet cable be required.

From the Control Panel, go to Printers & Scanners (or Devices and Printers in Win 7) and make the HP printer the default printer.
Next print, don't hit the "print" icon on your software, but instead click the File text-link and choose "print". This will bring up the print menu and show you where your printed docs have been going. Change the printer's submenu choice to the HP laserjet.
Go to my computer, click on control panel, click on printer/fax and see what is set for default. What ever printer icon that says ready, right click and set as default.
What you need to do is go to the printersmenu in the control panel and then see which printer is set as the default printer. If the selection is correct, see if any documents are pending in the print queue or not.If it still does not solve your concern then your printer has taken up an IP address that is no more recognized by your computer. So you need to change the port to which the computer is printing. If you want further support you can avail free technical support on http://tinyurl.com/m7ghqz.
try doing a self test print, if that works then you most likely have a communication problem between your computer and the printer. Try unplugging the usb cable and plug it back in see if you get any response.
