The laser pickup assembly is shot, over time the laser becomes weaker until it can no longer read the disc,it is time to retire the item, far cheaper to replace the entire unit.

SOURCE: dvd "unknown disc" message coming up

Have you tryed to use a lens cleaning disc yet. The laser lens on these players and recorders alike, must have the lens cleaned every oince in awhile. If that does not help, most likly you have a bad laser pickup assembly and you will need to replace the plaer as to have that repaiered, you could buy a new unit. Good Luck

SOURCE: JVC DVD Recorder Problems DRMV7

you can do the following to try and salvage it.

1) insert a cleaning disc, even if it doesn't read the disc the brushes should hit the lens a few times while it is trying to read, do this 4-5 times or until the disc reads.
2) if that fails (even if it doesn't fail) open up the case and use canned air to clean the components, these units are dust magnets.
3) i believe this unit uses a hitachi drive, once you have the model of the actual dvd drive, you should be able to order a replacement if it is indeed bad.

9 times out of 10 it isn't the firmware thats failing, it's either the lens assembly losing alignment, or bad dust accumulation, other than that, sometimes the boards fail on the dvd drive itself, so replacing it usually clears up the issue.

hope this helps,
trin

SOURCE: My JVC DR-MV7 will play

My JVC DR-MV7 will not accept any disc for playback. I insert a movie disc and it consistently rejects them. After about 15 to 20 attempts, sometimes it will stay and begin reading the disc. It also sounds like some internal components are encountering some resistance (moving parts inside?). Any ideas?

SOURCE: new dvd will not run

I learned too late to NOT try and do anything fast with this or any such machine. Wait very patiently for the results of the button you just pushed. I'm suffering for my impatience with the same unit. However, you can try this. Mine says it cannot read the DVD-- whether store-bought or one I made. I have gotten it to play by hard-starting the player. Press and hold the On-Off button on the unit for at least 20 seconds. Unplug the unit-- I read for 5 seconds, but do so for about 30. It might not play after the first try, but it did eventually. I'm searching right now for a more advanced re-set-- try to get it back to real factory-- right out of the box. Mine won't format for VR mode, let alone the playing problems I have. Hope this helps.

My jvc dvd /vcr combo will not record. I have the cable from my wall to the input in and the inout out coaxial goes into my tv. however it does not record anything

From the explanation, it looks like you are trying to record TV channel, correct? Some of these DVD VCR combos may not have built-in tuner. Do you have the instruction book? If not, you can download from jvc.com website. If you find it difficult, tell me the model number.

Player won't play any disc now

Time to look inside the dvd player. try readjusting the variable trimmer under the laser lens of the dvd player assembly. It is usually located under the lens assembly. try to adjust the lens at every 1 degree angle up to +/-5deg. sometimes it can be done. if not. time to change for new lens. damage lens is caused by using pirated DVDs or bad disc as the lens is trying to read the data on the cd.

Cleaning the lens

I believe that this model uses a DVD mechanism that looks just like the ones inside a computer tower. The whole unit must be removed from the main chassis and then the metal cover removed. Once that is done, the lens should be visible.

Why are you using a CD-R? You need to use a DVD-R! Or DVD+R.
