My Frigidaire refrigerator (Model #FRT17G4BW1) will not get cold, both in freezer and in frige area. The fan is running and it sounds like the compressor starts and then stops again. What do you think

I received this refrigerator used, I am not sure if it had this problem before or after I moved it to my home. It traveled on its side laying down for a short distance. Could that be its problem now?

SOURCE: frigidaire refrigerator model FRT21LRGW5-compressor sound is loud

Sounds like the start relay or start capacitor has failed.

Unplug the unit until you can get a replacement or the compressor will be ruined (if it's not already.).

PTC start relay is P/N 218721108 $36.49
Capacitor is P/N 218909901 $7.99

P/N and pricing from Sears Parts.

SOURCE: Problems with Frigidaire Refrigerator not cooling

In turning it off you may have only closed the air damper. Set it to 1/2 way.
If ice or frost in the air damper area on refrigerator side you may not be defrosting the freezer coil.

Inspect from bottom looking up with a mirror and flashlight. You should have no Ice buildup frost that is even and white is normal. Feel Check the back wall mid way down to 1/4 way to bottom. Push on the wall slightly. Crunching like frost or snow behind wall is not normal. I suspect non defrosting here.
Next eliminate the inside fan motor. It has to run to push air all over the freezer and refrigerator. If this fan doesn't run the results will be only the area with the refrigeration evaporator coil will cool and it may get too cold and resemble a non defrosting situation where the air is not able to circulate because of frost build up.

Next eliminate the Ice maker and light as a source of heat. Unscrew and unplug them
.
Next eliminate the door gaskets from not sealing. A piece of paper set tween the door and frame and pulled across it and you feel resistance all the way and the gaskets are smooth and not warped they are OK

Next inspect the condenser fan and coil by the compressor underneath. A dirty coil here will cause diminished heat removal and possible for a partial cooling of some of the freezer.

Only after inspecting all these items and determining they are OK should you proceed with refrigerant checking. Also a person with out the ability to measure the actual amount of refrigerant being put in should be shown the door. Even with topping off (adding some) refrigerant I use a scale to determine that I do not put in too much. So if you have a friend that does this and no way to tell how much is too much.... well with all due respect your getting what you pay for.

If this helps you understand your problem and need more information please post back, I will follow up. If it helped you determine your trouble please rate me as high as you can. Thank You for using fixya and good luck.

SOURCE: Frigidaire Side By Side Not Cooling

That sounds like the start relay is buzzing. Unplug and lets check the compressor to see how hot and if too hot to hold your hand on the top of compressor we need to leave it unplugged until we find out if the start relay, start capacitor, overload or if the condenser fan stops after running a short while. My frige & freezer do not cool, light & freezer fan run, compressor & coil fan do not run,air is blowing out of air vent in freezer,no cooling at all

If the compressor isn't running, the refrigerator or freezer won't cool - period. Hopefully, by now, you've had a repair technician come and troubleshoot the problem.

I have a model ARB2257CSR Amana frige (freezer on bottom) and the freezer is not working I think. there is a sound that comes on and off like the motor maybe is trying to come on... the sound comes from...

Sounds like the overload/relay is going out . If the noise is a " click " , replace the o/relay after checking the 3 terminals on compressor for continuity and each terminal to ground ( copper tubing ) .

Freezer is freezing but fridge is not cold as it was

Sounds like defrost timer is not putting the refrigerator in defrost every 8 hours. You freezer should be below -5 degrees. Also the condenser beneath the refrigerator possibly needs cleaning. First slowly turn the defrost timer clockwise until freezer goes in defrost. You should hear the sound of crackling noise in freezer after about one minute into defrost. If timer does not come out of defrost or does not turn itself then replace it. Let me know what you find, Thanks Sea Breeze

Bottom Freezer working but not side!

Typically the freezer air is circulated into the frige area to provide cooling. If the circ. fan is not working or the air ducts/channels/dampers are blocked with ice, food, etc. then no cool air will get from the freezer to the frige area. Check all the air channels and to see if the dampers are open along with the circulation fan running. The diagrams at the following link should help you see inside better. If your lower circulation fan is running then you likely have an air return/supply channel blocked with ice and will require an old style defrost (unplug unit and leave doors open for 24 hours to melt ice, etc.). If the fan isn't running then that needs to be replaced. Air channels can freeze up if a door is left open slightly overnight or other moisture enters the freezer/frige. http://www.partselect.com/MultiModels.aspx?ModelNum=ER6AHKXPQ&searchTerm=&RefineSearch=0

Side by side freezer

Check that the freezer circulating fan is running. The frige section may have dampers or vents (lets the freezer air cool the refer section) that are open too much. Usually the bottom area in the frige has a control lever to meter how much cold air gets to that section (lots for meat, little for fruits, etc.). Check the owners manual for operation of those vent dampers.
