I updated with this file sp39101 then when battery went flat I can't get it to reboot at all. All I get is the orange light on the start button when plugged into power or pc but nothing else happens. I was only trying to update the maps but looks like I briked it. Any help will be apreciated.
I suspect your charger or a.c. inlet please try plugging in on a different a.c inlet/adapter/socket using the same charger. Still not powering? then the problem is most likely your chager try with a different compatible charger and see what happens. (If battery is faulty it should power up when laptop is plugged into power).
Take out the battery but leave the power cable plugged in. If it boots bad battery

IPAQ are now all junk most are in the trash bin, its OLD !
run on ac pack take out the main battery
no old old battery works now , in fact becomes shorted.
and some of these "things" have 2 batteries, did you find and read the service manual yet, see if it has 2 batteries first.
some have coil cell too or is even soldered down.
sp39101
that sevice pack from HP real or from the 100s of hackers/scaplers sites that pray on folks using dead products? (legacy)
do tell source, and can be full of virus in fact easy as pie.
tell me how much will you spend on a device worth $1 used,
????? that be the 64,000 dollar question or the elephant in the room.
30buck for a good battery
or $300 at geek squad/?
no IPAQ has batteries this old that work
why expect that? 10 years old now, !!!!
the free manual is there. HP deleted theirs.
https://www.manualslib.com/manual/374130...
see page 5 , get the battery out of there
run with a/c pack first.
out the big battery
do steps 1 ,2, and 3, here,
work now?
i could not find a service manual showing the hidden batteries inside,
RTC CMOS coin cells are there somewhere
in some form
and not any last over 10 years,
some do but are measured weak, at 2.9v, not 3.3v new, means its falling fast on the deathh stroke as all batteries do. on earth.

Be sure the charger is connected to AC power. USB charging won't work when a battery's really dead. And it may take up to 24 hours, I've read, to get it recharged.
SOURCE: I can't install a certain HP update.
1. Download the SoftPaq to a directory on your hard drive.
The file downloaded is a self-extracting executable with
a filename based on the SoftPaq Number above.
2. Establish an Activesync connection between your iPAQ Pocket
PC and host PC.
3. Execute the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions
to install the Real Time Update.
4. Follow the instructions to perform a normal reset on the iPAQ Pocket PC.
on step 3 you should see the setup on your pdas screen do you see this?
Waiting for your reply. :)

Try hard reset: pressing and holding the calendar and iTask buttons and doing a soft reset for 2 seconds.
Hard resetting a WM 5 HX 4700 is to press and hold the Contacts and Mail buttons and
then doing a soft reset. The boot screen will popup with a message “To
perform a clean reset, which will clear all data in memory, press the
[Calendar] button”
If that fails, try upgrading to wm 6 or wm 6.1 then downgrading afterwards.
I've upgraded from wm2003SE to wm6.1 alkor rc2.2 rom.

There is no software that can make the computer fail before the BIOS posts. Very little that won't at least allow the kernel to boot. So you can always at least get to the BIOS which loads from a chip, not from your drive.
If you can't, it's definitely a hardware issue and you should begin standard hardware troubleshooting on the board. If you can, boot to a utility CD/DVD and test the drive. The computer uses virtual memory which constantly shifts portions of the operating system between the hard drive and RAM. This means a heat related failure can also corrupt the data on your drive, cause restarts during RAM intensive processes like an install, and cause funny behavior.
Heat related damage is the most common problem in
laptops because they run fairly hot and people like to use them on beds
and couches which are soft and therefore block the vents. When laptops
don't ventilate properly the memory, video, and hard drives will be the
first to fail.
Be prepared to have to reload your OS and all your software if this is the case. Recovery can be very hard.

Have you had previous problems with your laptop power supply and battery? I have this same laptop and use it very regularly. I do have problems with battery life, but never actually powering on. I suspect the battery is not accepting a charge. My suggestion is to replace the battery and see how things go.
