Dear,

USB controller

Although many computers have an integrated USB controller on the motherboard, many computers may also have an expansion USB controller card. If your USB connectors are not connected directly to the motherboard it is likely your computer is using an expansion card.

Motherboard USB controller

If your USB controller is integrated on the motherboard it is generally best to consult the motherboard documentation or visit the motherboard manufacturer's web page for online documentation regarding your USB controller.

Expansion card USB controller

If your USB controller is an expansion card it would be best to refer to the manufacturer's documentation or visit the manufacturer's web page for additional information about your USB controller.

Note: If your USB controller is currently installed and working and you are running Microsoft Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, or Windows XP, you can determine the USB controller currently installed by opening the Universal Serial Bus controllers category in Device Manager. For example, "SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller" indicates a computer is using the SiS chipset.

For more detail specifically to your product, check it!

Do you have to replace the mother board for USB replacements

Hello, yes you are right for that USB replacement you need to replace the motherboard, as USB port is Onboard.

Cheaper solution... there are adapters available that can convert your serial port to USB. Then purchase a 4 (or more) USB hub, to plug into that.

Whenever I insert my pen drive into my pc,it restarts computer. what is the problem ?

if this is only happening on 1 usb port, there is a short in that port that is causing you PC to shut down. Your motherboard BIOS is probably set to reboot on power loss which means it will boot right back up if it shorts out.

If it happens on every USB port then your pen drive is faulty and I would refrain from inserting it anymore before you damage your hardware.

If the pen drive works on someone elses computer, then it sounds like the SOUTHBRIDGE chip (chip on motherboard that controls USB, PCI slots, firewire ports, etc) is going bad or is faulty.

Usb malfunction

The USB ports have gone bad. Just because they show up in device manager as being recognized does not mean they are working correctly. They are controlled by chips onthe motherboard and if one of those chips has gone bad, then they just won't work. The cheapest solution would be to purchase a USB card and install it, bypassing the onboard ports. Thanks and please take a moment to give this solution a rating of fixya. Thanks! :c)

HP laptop - usb ports

USB ports require drivers to Run, if you do not have a driver for a usb port, windows will try to install them automatically, has this happened with your machine?

if this has not happened, then it could be a problem with the BGA controller chip(this happens rarely)

anyway to check if there are any issues with the hardware go to HP.com and run a live diagnostics from the site

USB port defective

Have you tried another USB cable? As long as it's got the same mini-USB connector, they are universal. Most digital cameras use these same cables, as well as many MP3 players and other handheld electronics devices.

If this doesn't fix it, most likely, it's a defective USB interface chip in the unit... and will need to be serviced. GARMIN 1-800-800-1020 (USA).

Fortunately, the USB ports on PC's are protected. When an overload is detected (> 500mA), the USB controller shuts down the offending port. This port can then be restored manually through the USB disgnostics, or simply shutting the PC down, and restarting it.
