My Lexmark 2300 will do the same thing if I have my wireless mouse plugged into USB port. Try unplugging everything else, including mouse and Flash drive from USB.

ORC is life form in the Lord of The Rings. What you want is OCR which stands for Optical Character Recognition. It is the software that converts a scanned document into a string of characters that you can edit to correct OCR errors. To be able to scan to a computer the computer and the printer must be connected through a USB port or be part of the same network. When you press the scan button, the printer tries to communicate with the computer and launch the scanning software installed on the computer. Install the software that shipped with your printer, connect the computer and the printer. If everything is correctly connected and installed, the scanning software will open to receive the scanned document.
To scan documents for editing and saving as PDF file, you will
need to install the Lexmark OCR scan software on your computer. The Lexmark
scan software (no downloadable version) is only available on the installation
disc that came with your printer. If you lost the disc, please contact Lexmark
Technical Support Center for assistance.
You can try to update your printer driver by downloading the Lexmark X7170 driver from the Lexmark website at http://bit.ly/fWPweq. Select your operating system, download and execute the file.
You can also try to decrease the scan resolution. Launch Lexmark All-In-One Center application on your computer. Select Scan mode > See More Scan Settings > lower the scan resolution value to 200 or 150 dpi. Note: This will decrease the scan file size and affect the scan output.
Or you can use a third party scan software to decrease scan file size. You can search the web for free scan softwares.
You need to install Lexmark OCR scan software in your computer to do the job. Just reinsert the printer installation disk in your computer and install the OCR scan software. Thank you for choosing Lexmark.
Here's the link for the available Lexmark X7170 drivers: http://bit.ly/cqLdux. Click on the drop-downs found below the page to choose the version of your computer's operating system. Download the correct driver, execute the file and follow the instructions in the software. If your computer will look for the Lexmark OCR scan software when you try scanning, you will be needing the printer installation disk. If that's the case, I suggest you contact Lexmark technical support for assistance.
There are several ways to scan. Place your document face down on the glass. If you have the Lexmark software loaded and running its monitor program, either press the scan button (the second button) on the printer or launch the Lexmark Imaging Studio (Start > All Programs > Lexmark 2300 Series > Lexmark Imaging Studio or double click on the shortcut on the desktop) and click one of the Scan options (pictures or text).
The All-in-one Center will open and you can adjust the scan settings and the destination for the scan. Click Scan Now to scan.
If you have Vista, you can also scan to Paint. In Windows 7, both Paint and Windows Fax and Scan will also acquire scans.
If you have problems, try a new USB cable or connecting to a different port. Scanners require bi-directional communication with the computer and can fail even when the printer works.
Cindy Wells (We had a scanner that would preview but not scan due to a bad cable. So it can give an intermittent issue.)
