Cannot find the error icon in the users manual. Has a red X on top of a rectangle. Flashes the icon, the lens does not extend, the shutter closes and the display goes dark.

Well maybe I can solve this..... My lens would not retract and showed two error messages. Tried a number of tricks that have been recommended on this site to no avail. Ultimately what worked for me was pushing quite hard on the barrel of the lens trying to force it back in ( yeah i know, sounds extreme but did'n't think it could make the situation any worse ). The lens remained in the locked out position not moving in spite of the fact that I pushed it fairly hard. When I turned it on the lens retracted and it appears to be fully recovered from whatever was ailing it. Hope this works for you.
