Tapping it has just worked for me as well. Amazing !

Tapping works! incredible! don't need to fork out for another 30GB player!

This is dangerous because it risks deleting all your songs (I hope you have them backed up somewhere). There is a reset hole on the left side of my machine and I stuck a pin in there and reset the player. That has solved the problem for me at least temporarily. It has been less than a day since I did it.

Can I join in on the thank yous? I could hear the disk trying to spin up, "whir whir whir click"...
Reboot, wait until you get the EAX logo, tap HARD (against the palm of my hand did not work) and voila! dont you know my jukebox works again!

I followed solution #7 instructions
A) Go to control Panel->add remove programs->Remove all Creative applications and drivers you
B) Reboot your PC
C) Download the latest Drivers (Not Firmware) and Install them
d)Reboot and Ensure Your device manager shows Windows Portable Device and does contain Zen Xtra
e)Download and Install ZENZ_PCAPP_LB_1_40_03_MTP.exe
f) While Installing - The program will complain that It still cannot see your zen..Keep Clicking OK to retry
g)After the 3rd (OK Clicks) attempt - It proceeds to install the balance of the software
h)Reboot your PC - after the reboot you should notice that ur ZEN shows the USB SYNC is ok- it shows the circular arrow
I) Run the Firmware Upgrade ZenXtraP4SAudible_PCFW_LB_2_10_03.exe
The only problem was that when firmware upgrade said player was rebooting (it was not) so I reset the Zen with a paper clip.
When it came back up the firmware install finished. I reloaded my songs and everything works great. Thanks to everyone for the great comments and info.

Holly S**t!!! I can't believe the tapping worked! I had to sign up for this website just so I could submit my thanks.
This is my second Zen Xtra. I ended buying a cheap used one on Ebay because my first one started having the headphone jack issue, so I just swapped the hard drive from the first into the used one (the fabled soldering fix didn't work for me). Worked great... for 8 months.
Today, I just plugged it in and the hard drive wouldn't spin up (went to recovery mode). Having dealt with Nomad firmware issues before, I was quickly anticipating the worst. A complete wiping of the hard drive and reloading firmware. Thank God I found this suggestion before I jumped off the deep end. I can't believe it worked.

Totally skeptical... but I just decided that I didn't have anything to lose. When it's starting up. It might got to the rescue mode screen. hit reboot. It spun up after I tried that a couple of times!
Good post bro.

Tap above the Menu button when the EAX logo comes up a few times....you'll feel the drive kick in.....seriously.

Comment by DerekHamlet, posted on Feb 01, 2008. After trying many different things before, what Derek said he did worked for me! Thanks Derek. I also tried this on a computer other than my own, I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it. Thanks again.

What the HECK! My son's 40GB Nomad Zen Xtra has been toast for probably two years. Whenever I see it I just think of all that dough sitting there wasted. I picked it up off the desk today and because the charger just happened to be sitting next to it, charged the battery, got the "rescue mode" screen, then searched for troubleshooting and got this site. To be brief, I reset, tapped it on the desk at the recommended time and now I sit here listening to my son's crappy music. I guess no the old man has an MP3 player. Now I just have to figure out how to use it. God bless whoever posted solutions and tips to this thread.

As if it hasn't been said enough already. Tapping it does work. I had a guy listen to it and he said the hard drive was toast, but not after a few taps, though you do have to tap it at the right time when starting up. I don't know when it was because I had it up to my ear when I got it working. Nice Fix

The tapping works!!! If your's is stuck on the rescue mode screen, press the reset button. Then when the EAX logo comes up, start tapping as previously described, on the right side, above the menu button. Tap it on a desk. Presto. It works again. Thanks so much!

Awesome....tapping worked for me too!!! At first it didn't, but I was just tapping it against the palm of my hand, but then I tried tapping it twice against my desk and it workd!!!! Thanks everyone!!!

Unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! tap tap doctor thank you.....
if you are trying and it hasn't worked yet, don't let up.
took several times but worked eventually by tapping when you turn it on, just above the menu button as it spins and tries booting up

For those of you who said to tap it on the right side of the EAX logo i could kiss you!!! thank you! it worked...

Same problem for me. Took a tumble, and was in the recovery mode saying Harddisk error. Tried tapping and it worked. Didn't lose any files or any music.

My zen was locked into the same "boot" mode and there was nothing I could do about it. I threw it in a drawer for over a year and pulled it out after reading about your "tapping" suggestion. I balked and did not think it would work but figured it was worth a try. I 'll be darn, after the first tap I heard the hard drive start to spin and lo and behold the menu came up. Thanks a million for your solution.

WOW! I'm glad I found this. I just dropped my Zen and the rescue mode kept coming up. The tapping works. You might have to tap a little hard. It took me a couple of tries to figure it out. Thanks!

UNBELIEVABLE! Tapping on the right side, just above the menu button worked!

I recently had the same problem and thought what the heck why not try a tap like suggested above and BAM!!! IT WORKEDDD!!!! THANX FOR THE GREEAAAT advice!

Tap it on the right side when the EAX logos comes up. A tpa right above the menu button should do it. It's kind of silly, but BELEIVE me, it works

This just happened to me, literally today - same mp3 player model. It's a bit of a pain but as far as I can tell, that's it up shit creek. I've pulled it apart and had a look about at what's inside, whenever I try to format it says 'disk error' or something similar. So, to be honest, I think that's it broken. Time to find a new model..
