Memory Sockets or Slots are the place where memory RAM modules are inserted in the motherboard. The Acer Aspire Z3731 has 4 (4 banks of 1) memory expansion slots. A memory bank is a group of memory expansion sockets, a bank must be completely filled with memory modules of the same size and type in order for the system to recognize and address the memory. i.e. :
2 sockets (2 banks of 1) This indicates that there are 2 memory slots. These are divided into 2 banks, and each bank consists of one memory slot. So you can add memory one piece at a time for the system to use.
3 sockets (3 banks of 1) This indicates that there are 3 memory slots. These are divided into 3 banks, and each bank consists of one memory slot. So you can add memory one piece at a time for the system to use.
4 sockets (2 banks of 2) This indicates that there are 4 memory slots. These are divided into 2 banks, and each bank consists of two memory slots. So you must add memory two pieces at a time (they must be the same size and type of memory) in order for the system to benefit from the upgrade.
8 sockets (4 banks of 2) This indicates that there are 8 memory slots. These are divided into 4 banks, and each bank consists of two memory slots. So you must add memory two pieces at a time (they must be the same size and type of memory) in order for the system to benefit from the upgrade.
12 sockets (3 banks of 4) This indicates that there are 12 memory slots. These are divided into 3 banks, and each bank consists of four memory slots. So you must add memory four pieces at a time (and they must be the same size and type of memory) in order for the system to benefit from the upgrade.

SOURCE: Acer l100 memory upgrade

I just attempted this, and I must say that there are many things about the other solutions that just plain wrong. Here is my step-by-step:

  1. Choose your RAM. Use the memory advisor from Crucial to tell you which ram to use: http://www.crucial.com/. I used their PC 5300 2*1GB kit. You can RAM from any retailer, as long as it is the same type recommended by the memory advisor.
  2. Lay the case flat and remove the screw in the middle of the top plate at the back, then slide the top plate off. You will probably have to break the warranty seal to do this.
  3. There are three black clips that hold the front bezel onto the top section. Prise them upwards and the bezel will come away.
  4. There is a black screw on the motherboard near the back, holding down a piece of metal attached to the top section (drive bays). Remove this screw, then pull gently on the plastic handle on the top section to loosen it.
  5. Lift the top section so that you can pull the power and IDE cables from the hard drive at the back, then lift it fully upwards. Be careful of the ribbon cable underneath, you may need someone to hold it up for you while you change the RAM.
  6. To remove the old RAM, do not simply prise it upwards as someone else said. The RAM slot has a metal clip at each side; push these outwards to the sides until they click. This releases the RAM so that they can be lifted out.
  7. Slide the new RAM into the bays and push it down to lock it into place. Make sure both sides click properly.
  8. Reassemble the case in reverse order, taking care to get everything stowed away in the right place. Take care remounting the front bezel to make it is properly in place before clicking the tabs back on top.
Hope someone finds this useful. By the way, while i can in there I noticed an empty expansion bay: anybody know what this is?

SOURCE: how to install memory upgrade

One othe slots for memory is under your laptop, and the other one is under you keybord. The one under you can reach by loosing the screws to the hatch. The one under your keyboard you can reach by remove your keyboard, the screws to remove the keyboard is behinde your laptop, they are on the hinge.
Be VYRY VERY carefull when you removing the keyboard, its al plastic and very very easy to break. Loose the screws on the both hinge, pull the keyboard backwards and up.
As i sayed before, do it very very carefull.

Good luck to you

SOURCE: how to expand max memory capacity on acer e500

You see, forcing the slot to receive more than its max (factory-default) capacity could cause unknown side effect that could leads to damage to either memory, mainboard or both.
But if you're lucky, it just detect 2GB but got somewhat increased performance.
But you have to be a risk-taker because I
really, really am not recommend this.

SOURCE: Acer Aspire T-180 Memory Upgrade question

hello!

You can buy 2- 512 mb DDR2 memory. It should be the same spec with the two current memory.
Memory should be the same specs and capacity, you insert it to your slot 4-1GIG to maximize, in your setting i recommend another 2-512mb bcoz your current memory is 512 mb capacity.

Not advisable to insert diferent capacity or diferent brand memory bcoz it cause damage to the mainboard and memory also.

Up to 4 GB of DDR2 533/667/800 MHz SDRAM (dual-channel support on four DIMMs)

in your case, you can add more 2-512mb memory, DDR 2 refer to your current memory about about this number. 533/667/800 and follow.
