I own an Olympus Evolt E-500. Unfortunately, it was dropped and landed on the corner of the case near the battery door. The camera turns on, lcd screen, flash, and shutter seem to work, BUT pictures are black. Difficult to view anything thru viewfinder. Camera store told me they didn't know what was wrong, but would cost me at least $270 to repair. 1) does anyone know what is wrong, 2) can I fix it myself?

I found this camera available for purchase as brand new for $450. Spending nearly $300 to repair an older version may no be a wise choice. You may find there is a market for the camera in its current non-working condition on eBay.

With that said, to your questions. 1) It will be difficult to diagnose without seeing it, but I have a suspicion in mind.

The viewfinder picture is actually what the lens sees, bounced up via mirror to a prism that projects the image to the viewfinder. If the mirror has become dislodged and is stuck in an odd position, the image would not be projected in the viewfinder. You can see the mirror when you remove the lens from the body. The mirror should be centered in the opening but at about a 45 degree angle. If it is loose or otherwise in the wrong place, this could be the problem. If the mirror is stuck and preventing the image in the lens from projecting on the sensor (behind the mirror) no capture will be possible. Other than the optics inside the lens and the mirror, there are few parts that could obstruct the image in the lens from reaching the viewfinder. Is the aperture of the lens open? If not, there may not be enough light to see the image in the viewfinder. This would also indicate that the lens is not opening up to let you see, and may not get set to the correct aperture when taking a picture. The camera usually opens the aperture to allow you to have a nice, bright image in the viewfinder. When you press the shutter release, the lens stops down to what the program says (or your manual selection) and the mirror lifts up out of the way, and the shutter fires.

2) Can you fix it? Maybe. Again, without seeing it - its hard to know for sure what the problem is and I don't know your level of skill either.

My suggestion is to bypass the camera shop that "doesn't know what the problem is but will fix it for $270" (how is that even possible??) and deal directly with Olympus USA Service and Support by phone or email to get an estimate / factory trained tech perform the repair.

Good luck!

SOURCE: e-500 lock-up

Shutter speed too low and aperture probably set at wide open [3].
You will find that after two minutes the shutter will respond but you will get a blurry picture.
This setting is rarely used but you only learn from playing with different settings.
Olympus instruction manual needs to be in a better language for the beginner to learn.

SOURCE: Olympus FE-270 Digital Camera

Hi zmija
Yes the LCD screen can be replaced.
As far as I know all the FE series use the same 2.5" screen.
It wont be cheap, It takes considerable skill to repair these
small cameras, Check out the repair shops on this site.
They will give you a price quote.

SOURCE: viewfinder's image is blurry

there's a little plastic screw right besides the viewfinder, i think it's on the right side. try to adjust sharpness with this screw (it's actually for people with glasses, allowing them to take pictures without wearing the glasses).

Can olympus e500 record video?

Yes, the Olympus EVOLT E-500 digital camera is capable of recording video. The camera has the ability to record video in AVI format, at a resolution of 640x480 pixels, and at a frame rate of 30 frames per second. The camera also has a built-in microphone for audio recording.
It's important to note that the video recording function of the Olympus EVOLT E-500 is quite basic and the camera is not designed primarily for video recording, so the quality of the video may not be as good as a dedicated video camera.
Also, the camera firmware is quite old and it may not be compatible with the latest video editing software. It's recommendable to check the software compatibility before recording videos.

I have an e500. The viewer will not come on for taking pics.

Unfortunately with the EVOLT E-500 it does not have the capability for a live view LCD screen. You must shoot images using the viewfinder only. The newer Olympus SLR cameras now have both viewfinder and live view LCD.

Olympus Evolt 510 LCD Issue.

I purchased a olympus evolt 510 - having problems taking picture in the dark. The camera will take 30 second to focus and sometimes will not take a picture at all. Also I find when I am in doors the camera will take a substantial amount of time to focus on an object this is specifically when the flash is in use. The flash seems to be adjusting flickering constantly. Seriously Annoying.

If you can be some assistance I would deeply appreciate it.

Best,

JP

No picture on my LCD

When in the taking mode- this SLR will not show an image as other cameras- because the mirror is down for the reflex view finder- this is normal for this type of camera although I understand there is a make/model that gets around this - but it is not the E-v 500 just like my E-v 300
