Some time back, my TCD-D8 unit's servo mechanism that's used to open the cassette slot stopped functioning. There may even be a DAT inside currently, but it's not simply stuck, as flipping the "open" switch no longer activates the servo. Power to the unit IS good.
Recently, while the unit has been sitting idle, but plugged-into its power source (been that way for over a year!), the servo mechanism started making intermittent sounds, of its own volition and a second or so duration. Obviously, something has gone brain-dead in the logic.
Sony, according to their web-based support site, no longer even repairs this item! I've looked around... is there someone who can, that you might know of, and would the cost be worth it? Thanks to anyone who may be able to help, here.
I have the predecessor model (TCD-D7), and had the exact same problem. With much coaxing (cycling the power and hitting eject), I was able to get it to eject, however the unit can now no longer load tapes to play or record. The loader mechanism engages and attempt to load the tape, but spins its wheels and ultimately fails. I have the predecessor model (TCD-D7), and had the exact same problem. Im having a power problem with mine. :(Im having a power problem with mine. :(
I called Sony USA and they said they can fix the problem by servicing the unit. Also, since I'm from Canada they transferred me to Sony Canada. They too said they could fix the problem by sending the unit to their repair place. It might take 150 bucks to fix the problem but worth it all in the end.

The "solution" by techman appears to be entirely inappropriate because the link he posts takes one to a company that repairs data storage units, NOT Digital Audio Tape (DAT) recorders.

sounds like a belt slipping try renewing them they are fairly cheap to replace.sony tend to be very reliable but this is quite an old item now and belts degrade with time and use.farr64
This sounds like the internal drive belt has broken and the mechanism is not in a "final" position. The noise you hear is hte motor trying to get the mechanism back to a known condition. This should be a simple repair for any audio repair shop. Expect a parts cost in the $5 range. Add in the local labor rate for the total repair cost.
Check and clean the contacts.
Also if you take the back cover off, you can see the red and black battery wires connected to the board. Make sure they are connected.
did you record them on the same unit?
It may be an alignment problem.
If it's the same unit, try cleaning the heads.
There are dat cleaning tapes too, but they beat on the heads.
