I bought this Sony 29" TV Brand Nw about 2.5 years back and it has been working fine. Recently, it has started to give this thumping noise that comes from inside the cabinet and it comes whenever I turn it ON. Also, the picture sometimes becomes grainy and i thought it was some interference but now I have discovered that when picture becomes grainy, if i restart the TV it becomes clear again.
This noise is really annoying and the technicians here in NZ thinks normal, though no one has physically inspected the unit, I have spoken to them on the fone. Please advise.

Re: KV-XJ29M50 29" TV-Loud thumping sound on startup
Symptoms are not related, what you hear is the high voltage turning on and that is normal if it only does it for less than a second, the grainy picture might be intermitant, dont turn it off, when the picture is grainy tap the side of the set to see if it racts and if it does you know you have a loose conection. This could be outside because of a loose ground on tha cable or inside in the tuner.

I would look for intermitent solder connections on the small horizonal driver transformer as well as other HV Componets.(HV Transformer etc.) Also solder up the Vetical output IC. These have been common causes of failures. I would not use the set until these have been checked and soldered. If you don't, a massive failure of the hoizonal circuit and powersupply will occur.
Hope this helps,
It must be connected with the color circuit of your tv, a board connected to back end of the tube. Could be dust, cob web or carbon deposit shorting a transistor. Popping noise if loud enough can be attributed to high voltage circuit fault and picture tube.
I have had my Sony KV-32FV15 for about 2 years now and nothing has ever gone wrong(even going through several moves.) I recently moved again and when I plugged in the TV, you can hear the sound perfectly but the screen just stays black. You can not even hear the squeal that the TV makes when comming on. Is there anything that I should initially look at to troubleshoot. I cannot afford at this time the $250 fee to repair my TV. I look forward to your input and hopefully I can get this TV working again.
intermittent problems can usuall be liked to bad solder connections. And sony typically has some that will develop after a few years in the power supply. so check for bad sodler connections throught the main board & give a close look to the power supply & check you work after to make sure you have no shorted pins.
