I bought this Sony 29" TV Brand Nw about 2.5 years back and it has been working fine. Recently, it has started to give this thumping noise that comes from inside the cabinet and it comes whenever I turn it ON. Also, the picture sometimes becomes grainy and i thought it was some interference but now I have discovered that when picture becomes grainy, if i restart the TV it becomes clear again. This noise is really annoying and the technicians here in NZ thinks normal, though no one has physically inspected the unit, I have spoken to them on the fone. Please advise.
Symptoms are not related, what you hear is the high voltage turning on and that is normal if it only does it for less than a second, the grainy picture might be intermitant, dont turn it off, when the picture is grainy tap the side of the set to see if it racts and if it does you know you have a loose conection. This could be outside because of a loose ground on tha cable or inside in the tuner.

You are correct, the noise is noticeable more in Sony sets tha any other brand but is still consider normal, the description the manufacture gave you is their way to tell is not a problem. Is good it only happens when is turn on because is really no way to get rid of it.There is a way by disconecting the dimagnetizer but that will give you color problems and that is not good.

thanks jomaru, but why is is that it has suddenly started giving this problem and why don't other sets that i went and saw in stores give the same nows, is there a way to get rid of it. I have just found the manual and noticed this in the troubleshooting section - 'A boom sound is heard when the tv is turned on."
Possible Cause - "The TV's demagnetizing function is working. This does not indicate a malfunction."
Thanks
