Question about Sony KP-51WS500 51" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Botched Repair, now what

My Sony KP-51WS500 had convergence ICs go bad. I had it repaired for$528.00 (ouch). When the TV was returned the color alignment was terrible, and there was still a pin cushion effect. They came back to fix it, 2 weeks later, and at 6pm. It is better but not as good as it was. They did a lot of fine 'local' adjustments on the cross hatch pattern. Now there is still a bit of a bow in the picture and things that should be straigt across the screen, have a bit of a wave to them. I still have a Size Limit Error on the Auto Registration function and a Vertical deflection stopped self diagnostic message. I'm quite frustrated with the company I went through. I will be dealing with them. In the meantime, do you have any suggestions? Thanks, Ken

Why is my tv in 3D?

The convergence is regulated by two ICs. When the convergence ICs become faulty you get colors not matching and shapes show kind of colored halos that may resemble a 3d effect.

The problem is fixed replacing the two ICs. The repair requires component testing and precision soldering experience and must be done by a technician.

I have a kp-51ws500, that comes on the colors get wierd then it shuts off, any ideas? Lamp?

Not Lamp, it is problem of convergence output ICs failure. KP-51WS500 is rear projection tv that has 3 color tubes to make picture, this tv does not have Lamp as light source in DLP tv.
Replace convergence output ICs to fix the issue. Local tv repair shop will help you if you have no experience in electronics stuff fix.

Picture bowed and colors don't line up on my Sony KP-51WS500 Sony KP-51WS500 its bowed and words show up different colors like in 3s.

This is a convergence problem that can be as simple as poor solder connections on the convergence ICs or defecive ICs. If you can solder you can repair this yourself, Let me know if you wish to attempt the repair and I'll provide additional details and instructions.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.
