Tv was on and shut off, sparks in back when replug in
My Philips Magnovox is only 6 years old. I turned it on in the front and less than a minute later it shut off and smelled like electrical. It won't turn back on and when I plug it in, it sparks in the back. I keep it unplugged now:)) I want to know what's wrong and if it's worth it to fix it moneywise. I spent $700.00 new.

The fact that you have smoke coming from the back is not a good sign if the quality of the picture was good before it failed its worth if you put in 150 to 200.Stay away from it and call a qualified technician for an estimate then you'll know.Good luck.

Your power supply is gone. There is only one option. Sell it for scrap and get a new TV. They don't make parts for this TV anymore. Phillips/Magnovox has discontinued it and all parts.
I have a philips pf50 9630a/37 tv may come on or it may not unplug it and take a chance then comes the 6 steady red flashes followed by 3 rapid red flashes the screen had been completely replaced by philips a year and a half ago
You have problems with a condenser that allow the power supply to maintan an acceptable level of voltage in order to keep the TV on. take to a tech to be fixed. unfortunatelly, this problem needs a tech to take measures in the circuitry to find the component that causes the problem.
It could be a component short or crack on the power supply board. Open the back of the TV and look for signs of defect. The power supply board is the brown one on the right with huge capacitors.
Since the set needs to be unplugged and plugged back in, the requlator circuit in the power supply may have a problem.
The set is over a decade old and other things are going to start going wrong with it.
Capacitors will dry up, solder joints will begin to crack and the picture tube will begin to get weaker.
My suggestion is to invest in a new set, with a newer technology.
Hope this helps.
Any advice would be helpful, Thanks.
