Re:
Sounds like your motherboard or the memory on the motherboard has gone bad. The motherboard handles the initial start-up of the computer, like testing memory, and making sure all the other components can communicate with each other. Your hard drive, and thus all your data, is fine. If you have other memory around (it will need to be the exact same type thats currently in there), you can swap it out and see if the computer boots with new memory. If not, then the entire motherboard needs to be replaced. You just need to contact your PC manufacturer to get a replacement motherboard.

What displays on the monitor? Have you tried pushing escape button to get into bios settings and be sure it is set up to look for the HDD 1st? Also is there a CD or DVD in the drive? If so, remove that and try again.
When you plug in the power cord is there any lightswhatsoever on the laptop, where the plug goes in or on the AC Adapter of thepower cord?
When you press the power button do you hear fans running, hard drive spinning, lights on the computer, hear any beeps or lights constantly blinking, hear theDvD/CD drive click and the light on the drawer of the DvD/CD turn on for asecond or two? If so the laptop is trying to boot or may have booted, butthe screen is not showing for some reason.
Beep tones and blinking lights tells the technicians what is going on with thelaptop and why it is not booting. Most times it's a motherboard issuewhen you hear beeps or blinking lights continuous.
Maybe you have a Static Charge Buildup. Remove the Power Cord, Remove theBattery, then Press and Hold the power button for 30seconds. After 30 seconds plug the power cord back in (leave the batteryout) and hit the power button to see if it boots. If it does, you can putthe battery back in and let it charge.
Sorry, sounds like a dead hard drive. If you can gain access to the drive, you should check for loose connections. Also, listen closely to the notebook as soon as you start it up - can you hear the drive spinning? Can you hear any loud clicking or grinding noises? Any odd sounds can also mean a dead or dying hard drive.
Good luck, and please rate this answer if you feel it has helped you!!
Hey there i might be young im 14 years old but i have the same laptop (Compaq N610c) and i had the same problem i found out that if you take the ram out and rub the small golden plates with a rubber then place it back (the ram is found next to the mouse pad) i then powered the laptop up without the hard drive i then took the battery several times and powered up it then started working again within 5 mins of taking the battery in and then taking it out again it then starting to power up with the screen showing the logo at the begining after it had shown the logo i turned it off then inserted the hard drive back into the laptop and powered up it worked and is still working now Hope This Helps :D My Email Adress Is [email protected]
if you have anymore problems.
I suggest removing the battery when plugging it to the wall outlet or are you trying to charge it?
I think the one that is spinning is the hard drive reseat it then lets see what happens
try to purchase a new hard drive if problem persists. please indicate also the status of the lights on your laptop ill reply with more steps when you've indicated everything
It seems all Compaq laptops are infected by this problem.
If you are sure that the AC port and the AC adapter is working?
Can you hear the laptop trying to boot? ..e.g. Hard Drive spinning up, Floppy Disk Drive noise, etc.. if so ...Try hooking up a external monitor..
Does it smell like anything has burnt? (Call for service)
Is there anything that sounds loose when you shake it? (Call for service or you can to open it?)
Try booting your laptop from a bootable floppy if you have one. Or use Compaq's Recovery CD. But I doubt if you use recovery CD, you might lose data on your HDD. Which O.S. are you using?
The Boot-up mechanism checks all the hardware before starting Windows. Some times floppy drive doesn't allow the laptop to boot further by either not responding or sending wrong signal.
