Is there a way to detect if the microwave is leaking radiation?

I was told you could check to see if a microwave is leaking radiation by unplugging the microwave from the wall outlet, and putting the cell phone into the microwave; if the cell phone rang, the microwave was leaking (which is what happened - the cell phone rang, inside the microwave, while the microwave was unplugged.) Then I brought a new Oster microwave, checked the microwave using the same method, with the cell phone, and again, the cell phone rang while in the microwave. Is the cell phone an accurate and reliable way to check for radiation in the microwave? Please advise. Thanks.

The doors are designed with switches to ensure no microwave leakage. If the door is damaged the switch will not engage and the microwave will not operate.

I have heard that microwaves produce small amounts of radiation but still not sure if it harms human’s health on daily basis while using microwave ovens. But if you want to detect the radiation level of your wicrowave then buy this device https://ecotestgroup.com/products/ecotes... . Hope it will help you.

It seems to me that only a specialist in microwave ovens can handle this task. Self-diagnose it probably will not work. Look for information on special sites that have information about microwave troubleshooting. Bosch microwave troubleshooting

There are on-line companies that sell electronic microwave leak detectors. Some are very inexpensive, and can be used for years.

No! this could not be further from the truth, you can buy a microwave test card and check for leakage around the door seals, or take it to a service professional to do a quick test.

SOURCE: New Microwave

Well one would presume you could simply measure the bracket and the microwave, and ask a retailer for the dimensions of units with similar dimensions.

They may also have this bracket and be able to compare the sizes before purchasing your new one.

Not knowing the dimensions of either the bracket itself or the microwave, this would be the only solution i can think of.

SOURCE: Microwave oven won't work

If the internal fuse is good, it may be an open thermostat or thermal cutout on or near the magnetron or on top of the cavity / body of the oven or veen on the floor of the oven chassis.

Hopefully the vent fan was on strong enough to keep the steam out the of controls. That steam could scramble or damage the circuit board or keypad.

You should unplug it from the power line for a few minutes, plug it back in, then try again.

If you or a friend decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, linked here on Fixya: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

SOURCE: GE Profile Advantium 120 Microwave (Model SCA1000DBB03)

We have the service manual for this model and have uploaded it to our site here to help you.

You will need the
free Acrobat Reader to view or print it in case you don't have it.

A microwave can be dead for many reasons.

It may be the fuse, which is usually located behind the grille, on the floor of the oven behind the control panel, between the door switches, or on the filter board near where the cord comes into the unit.

If the fuse is good, it may be an open thermostat or thermal cutout (TCO) / thermal fuse on or near the magnetron or on top of the cavity / body of the oven.

If it goes dead for a while during or after cooking then comes back on, the magnetron is probably overheating and causing the magnetron thermostat to open.

Then when it cools, it closes the circuit and allows power through again.

When checking TCOs or thermostats, if it has a hood fan thermostat, that should read open, as opposed to the others, which should read closed.

So don't let that fool you.

If the cavity thermostat needs to be checked or replaced you'll need to pull the oven from the wall.

If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor.

If it went dead a few seconds after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a failing high-voltage transformer.

If it goes dead or blows the breaker (or GFI) when you plug it in or open or close the door, then there's a problem with a door switch or door switch mount.

If it's intermittent or random, it may be a bad connection, usually on the control board or a loose fuse holder, or even an intermittent fuse.

You should do a continuity test on the fuse while it's in the holder (with the microwave unplugged, of course) then turn the fuse by hand or take it out and put it back in, then test it again.

If you remove the fuse, then press the meter leads against the ends, it can allow internal contact to be made and make a bad fuse appear to be good.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

G.E. combo microwave oven made loud popping sound, now nothing works. flipped the breaker, still no power

Microwave ovens are the only appliance I absolutely discourage any form of customer repair due to the fact that they hold lethal amounts of voltage, even if unplugged. They also require radiation shielding testing to make sure radiation does not seep into your kitchen.
More than likely the high voltage transformer blew out.

My radiators are getting warm when my heatings not on. Any ideas??

You can check your microwave for possible LEAKS and make sure there are no FOOD particles blocking the oven's fan system To check for leaks, place a DAMP paper towel around the door seals and place a glass cup of water in the microwave. If there are leaks of microwave energy you will find DRY or WARM areas on the paper towel. BE CAREFUL not to peer or watch the test, done on level HIGH for 1 minute. Microwaves may cook the vitreous humor (liquid in eyeball,) just like it would an egg. If the towel is dry or hot ANYWHERE after the test, TOSS the microwave. Your safety is not calculated by the cost of a new oven.Let me know how this goes; I have tested many older ovens and have found quite a few leaky ones.

Window is clouded can not see in but can from inside

Honestly, it is best left alone, Microwaves are treated to prevent radiation leakage and splitting a door would probably upset that radiation preventing shield from operating fully. If you really want the window cleaned, take it to a repairman who is can give you a certificate that the oven is safe and has no radiation leaks after completion of the job. (Microwaves can be extremely dangerous appliances)

I have a Cookworks Microwave Oven Model EM717CKL. I have noticed that while it is in use, quite a strong draught is coming from the hinge side of the door. I have searched to find out if this is normal...

It depends on the amount of leak as a higher amount is not acceptable as there can be radiation leak. Please check the hinges and the door seals as there must be minimum gap to the chamber and door.
A small amount of the food flavors can be smelled while the microwave heats as this is normal. The door protect from any microwave leaking to the front and should not be a concern unless you are able to measure any stray radiation.

How do I test a microwave for 'leakage'?... Does calling to a cell phone placed inside a closed microwave indicate 'leakage' if the cell phone rings/receives the call? Thank you

The "cell phone" test is a fraud. Cell phones operate on a frequency range much lower than microwaves (800 MHz for phones and 2.5 GHz for the ovens), and the metal screen in the microwave door won't affect them. The phone will ring loud and clear and it doesn't mean the oven is leaking microwaves.

You can buy a "microwave leakage test card" at some stores that supposedly change color when you hold in front of the door if the oven is leaking microwaves. This is also a fake. It actually responds to heat, on the thory that if heat is escaping around the door then microwaves are too. That's wrong.

The only sure way to test for microwave leakage is with a standardized leakage test meter. This is a fairly expensive electronic device. You really don't need to worry about microwave leakage unless the door of the oven is visibly out of alignment so that it isn't closing and sealing properly. If the door hasn't been getting slammed shut and the oven hasn't been dropped, everything should be fine. Take the oven to a service shop for a leakage test if you are concerned.

One final note: Microwave energy drops off rapidly with distance. Just don't stand right in front of the oven while it's running.

Hope this helps ease your mind. Thanks for using Fixya!

Our Jenn-Air built-in microwave in the kitchen appears to have had a bead of white silicone that sealed the interior cabinet walls and interior base. That has deteriorated away. Is it just cosmetic or...

Silicone will not block microwave radiation. However, it isn't only cosmetic. The silicone keeps liquid that spills inside your microwave (or even steam) from getting into the guts of your microwave and rusting and causing shorts.

Makes a different humming sound than usual, does it leak radiation

Buy a detector to test your microwave to be sure it is not leaking radiation. The detectors range in price from ten dollars to about thirty five dollars and can be purchased in most hardware stores. If you discover that the microwave is leaking radiation, never try to repair this appliance yourself. Take the microwave to a professional for repair. All things considered though, the microwave oven is fairly inexpensive these days it may be a better idea to just purchase a new one.

Spacemaker XL Microwave oven smells like something is burning when in use

Be very careful around this. Take this to someone and have it checked for radiation leaks. Leaky microwave ovens have been known to make people sterile and can contribute to certain types of cancer. This is not a joke. At the minimum you have a fire hazard.

Clicking sound while running

Not likely.

It sounds more like a failing turntable, fan or stirrer, but it would need to be checked to be sure.
