What couses red diagonal line and red back ground picture on my toshiba television.

Possible screen controls in the set are up too high---if you turn picture and brightness to zero does the screen get full black?

screens set too high would give diagonal faint trace lines in the picture.

These sets also should get a annual cleaning of the lens and sometimes the mirror inside= if this is the case the picture will usually look darker and dull ----this will not affect lines in picture.


the lens are easy to clean but other actions depend on what your response is to the above information.

Check the video output transistos for short [Red]. check for excess screen volttage.

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.

Your alignment is off. Go to the set up menu then convergence. hit right and you will be in the convergence menu. select the color that is not in alignment. The green line does not move. if blue and green are lined up the line will be cyan. if red and green are lined up the line will be yellow. when all three are lined up the color will be light. it can be a picture tube problem. moreover, check if your tv is dusty inside it . clear it with blower and try again.

i have a samsung rear projection , and it has red lines going across the screen. i put it in the back of my cuboard and went out to buty a new tv . now a few months on i got it back out to have a play with it and i coverd up the red bulb with something fireproof and now the picture is great again just that there is no red anything that is red looks a bit darker. its not great but a least its some use now and i use it in my bedroom. it mite not be much help but a least i dont have to keep it in a cuboard anymore.

These are called retrace lines they occur because of the blanking pulse not turning off the electron guns in the picture tube during the retrace period. Since this is occuring with the red gun there may be a proble with the video circuitry connected to the red electron gun of the picture tube. This would include the red amp and the red driver transistors. You will need a schematic and a multimeter to properly test these items.
