Restart When I turn my laptop on, it appears as though windows is about to start (the blue login screen appears and says 'windows is starting up...'), then the laptop restarts. If I left it alone it would keep on restarting. The same thing happens in Safe Mode. I think the problem may be because I updated my java. Is there any way I can turn on the laptop without going to get it fixed? Thanks, Harry

Dugiehowsa could be right but it sound to me that another reason might be that the laptop is overheated and the fan is dusty

This may be late... but I just diagnosed the same problem. In safe mode, go into the display driver and uninstall it. This forces the standard windows driver to load. If this fixes the problem, reload the driver, but set the hardware acceleration to NONE -- this is in the troubleshooting tab for the display adapter. The cause of the problem is probably the video chipset, which is unfortunately on the motherboard. However, disabling the hardware acceleration does make the laptop usable.

It sounds like you may have some corrupted system files. You should be able to repair them using your Windows XP installation CD and the steps out-lined in this article. http://www.short-media.com/review.php?r=313

SOURCE: Hi, laptop will not start

Seems like your Operation System crashed. Find your reinstall CDs and reload windows.

If you find someone who can pull the hard drive and hook it to another machine and run a check disk that might save you from reloading it and losing all your data.

SOURCE: Having trouble turning my laptop on at the moment

problem must be with the fan or HDD because these are only two internal devices which does mecanical job inside.
Sometime overheating of CPU or the malfuntioning of RAM make noise thrugh the system speakers.

Testimonial: "Thanks very much, that has helped narrow the problem down which should make it easier to resolve"

HI, if you press F8 during start up, before you see the Windows logo appear you should get advanced start-up options appear. Select "disable automatic restart on system failure", when the system blue screens again make a note of the text displayed and post it here. I should then be able to offer further advise.

On start up computer will not display log in window, unable to get to login screen. Blank screen

AS YOU ON THE SYSTEM BEFORE WINDOWS STARTS KEEP PRESSING THE F8 KEY CONTINUEOUSLY. A MENU WILL APPEAR. SELECT SAFE MODE AND ENTER. WINDOWS WILL LOAD IN SAFE MODE. THIS WILL SOLVE SOME OF YOUR PROBLEMS. NOW RESTART THE SYSTEM IN NORMAL MODE.

IF THIS DOES NOT WORK SELECT "LOAD WINDOWS WITH LAST KNOWN GOOD CONFIGURATION " AND THEN RESTART. THIS WILL SURELY SORT OUT YOUR PROBLEM.

PLS REPLY OR COMMENT. THANKS

The laptop starts then windows says loading then a blank screen. battery light was orange and after 3 hours plugging it in now it is blue. could it be the battery?

try doing this step.

-turn off the laptop completely
-turn on the computer and go to Safe Mode by tapping on F8 once you press the power button
-once you were able to login to Safemode, click on start>run>type msconfig.

it should show you a picture just like this:

-go to the Startup tab then click on Disable All
-then click on Services tab
-put a check on "hide microsoft services"
-Click Disable All
-Click Apply then OK
-it will prompt a message that says you need you to restart the computer, click restart now

My HP Notebook first showed a black screen and then after a hard shutdown and restart it only shows a black screen with colored lines. It seems that it is starting up even though I can't see the screen.

Try this,Start in VGA mode.Once started, update your video drivers

To use a Safe Boot option, follow these steps:
  1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when the Boot Menu appears.
  2. Select an option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
  3. When the Boot menu appears again, and the words "Safe Mode" appear in blue at the bottom, select the installation that you want to start, and then press ENTER.
Safe Boot options loadTOCNode(2, 'moreinformation');
  • Safe Mode (SAFEBOOT_OPTION=Minimal): This option uses a minimal set of device drivers and services to start Windows.
  • Safe Mode with Networking (SAFEBOOT_OPTION=Network): This option uses a minimal set of device drivers and services to start Windows together with the drivers that you must have to load networking.
  • Safe Mode with Command Prompt (SAFEBOOT_OPTION=Minimal(AlternateShell)): This option is the same as Safe mode, except that Cmd.exe starts instead of Windows Explorer.
  • Enable VGA Mode: This option starts Windows in 640 x 480 mode by using the current video driver (not Vga.sys). This mode is useful if the display is configured for a setting that the monitor cannot display.

Startup

hi,
you should have specified about your laptop. but you can try the following steps.
1. check the powercord and battery.
2. check screen brightness and contrast.
3. assuming that you login . click start-> run ..( msconfig ) -> and press ok-> in the window that appears click the startup tab. now click disable all. this will probably help..
4. or you might be running Vista in a 512 ram.
5. or you can try to insert the windows installation disk and start the laptop. and if the blue screen appears continue reinstalling the OS. this would probably help.
