Question about Sharp 55R-WP4H 55" Rear Projection Television
Our Sharp 55r-wp4h (made April 2002) just past extended warranty started turning off after a while (40mins if left off for few days to 10 mins if left off for only an hour). When it turns off first video shrinks and disappears and sound goes off. The view timer led comes on with flashing off twice continuously. TV will not turn off by remote or front panel switch and will have to be unplugged. Did get an estimate for flyback for $425+tax and did not believe it is flyback. I have some basic debugging skills. On this TV cracked solder on convergance board had caused problems and was fixed. With newer TVs available for around $800 I am trying to see if I can fix this myself. Hardrocko & others thanks for your help here.

Last night after posting this problem, I pulled TV out of entertainment center and opened back cover. Turned TV on & watched flyback & circuit to see what might happen. No arcing. TV did not turn off for 45min. We watched a DVD for nearly 3 hours without TV shutting off. I fear if I close back cover, whatever is getting affected by heat will start failing again. This TV has 9 or 10 PCBs. Do you think it could be bad solder in an area I have not checked? Thanks.
After working 2 days without turning off, it started to turn off in less than 10 minutes and would not turn on.
I spent couple of hours looking at various components and testing them. Nothing I could find as bad. Then found a cracked solder at the bottom of flyback. Fixed it and set is working. I am keeping my fingers crossed.
If the problem is intermittent like I had check solder especially around components that get hot.
sounds the same as mine. appliance co. says it is the vertical card 400.00 or so
