Hi john you need to replace circuit board that has timer and auto shut-off I have same problem krups doesn't think it is a safety issue because the coffee maker has a thermal switch. But I still think it is. Also if you are not carefull when you fill with water it will staem back in your face!
SmallAppliance.com has special order replacement boards.
I will be replacing mine

Yes!!! by the word lid do you mean the top or swing out filter holder? If you use small flat screwdriver you can expand plastic at hinge enough to pull apart!

Krups aroma

The basket for the coffee is located about the carafe (the round part on the front of the unit). It swings open from the right side. You should see a small ridged tab to pull toward you to open it up. Once open it will swing to the left. Put in a cone type #4 filter and your coffee, add water and you are ready to go!
