You will need to get the computer scanned for this concern. The "neutral switch" has been replaced with a Multi lever positioning switch. When the shifter has been moved to a selected gear, the computer turns on different solenoids to make that gear work, along with a manual lever in the trans valve body. I feel you will find a couple P07-- codes, as to what may be wrong inside your transmission. It may be a simple repair, as possibly a vehicle speed sensor, but the codes will help get you a flow chart as to the problem.
SOURCE: I have a 2002 Silhouette that won t shift into 4th, stays in 3
it may have worn valve body coponents or there stuck, the first thing i would try is a bg trany flush, this helps 75% of the time and its cheaper than a rebuild, its worth a try, you may even ask to have the filter changed if its never been done,

The shift selector linkage can get sticky once in a while. Put your parking brake on and with the car off put it into 1st or 2nd gear then pull the handle off of the shifter. Remove anything in your cup holder and then you can snap off the shift console cover and get to the shift linkage beneath it. Spray lithium or silicone grease into all of the adjoining linkage rods and work it in and out. Then do the same at the top of the shift selector lever that you pulled the handle off of and push down on the top of the little plastic knob protruding from the top of it...that is how you change gears. It may just be sticky only in THAT spot but it doesn't hurt to get everything while you have it apart. Good luck let me know!

I had this problem and dealer said I needed a new tranny. Took it for second opinion at local trans shop and they replaced the shift switch in the tranny for $250.
