This problem came on suddenly and only occours when recording. When switched to record mode, the viewfinder and the lcd screen is completely black as if the lenscap were still on. The screen information: Rec/Pause: W/S: Tape Remaining: etc. are all present but it only records complete darkness. Playback (of previously recorded material is perfect and I have tried all camera settings and new tapes to remedy the problem but to no avail. If anyone can help I would very grateful.
Thank you.

I have the same problem as described here. The problem came on suddenly, just after charging the battery which is now fully charged. I tried changing the tape and fiddling with menu settings but nothing helped. I can watch previously recorded material, but can only record darkness.I have the same problem as described here. GUEST! Do you happen to have their number handy? I am in Australia but going to the UK for a wedding - and I will be in Manchester - apparently 1 day by express post away from Plymcare Devon - and obviously, have the same problem (I totally blamed my clumsy friend for killing the camers - it just died in his hands - now I owe him a BIg apology!) :)
Thousands of us have had this problem with Canon MV600 camcorders, and now they have aknowledged there is a problem and are repairing them for free!! Get in touch with Plymcare, Marshall Road, Devon PL7 1YB (sorry didn't write their number down). Or just remove battery and tape and send it to them - you'll get it back within a week, working like new, totally free. Just got mine back and filmed my 5 1/2yr old for first time since it went off on her 3rd birthday!
When you zoom in and out is the lens moving, if its not then quite possibly the flex has come loose or its the mainboard, thats the only two things that can cause your problem. i am a canon repair tech for video and it should be sent in for service sorry.

Re:
Normally there are two reasons for the given problem.
1). Bad or defective CCD. and/or
2). shutter not working.
in the first case the only solution is the replacement of the CCD. and in the later case sticking of shutter blade, non functioning of shutter blade will cause the problem. This can be rectified by sending it to some repairer.

Follow this procedure to troubleshoot if there is no picture or a black screen appears in the viewfinder or LCD when attempting to record. NOTES:
* Because each of these steps represents a possible solution to this issue, check the viewfinder or LCD status after completing each step. * It may be necessary to refer to the operating instructions provided with the camcorder for information on how to perform a task on your specific model.
1. Ensure the lens cap on the front of the camcorder has been removed. 2. Ensure a fully-charged battery is inserted in the camcorder. 3. Ensure the STANDBY/LOCK switch is set to the STANDBY position. 4. Turn on the camcorder and set it to the CAMERA mode. 5. Look to see if an image can be seen in the viewfinder or LCD. IMPORTANT: Some camcorders have both a viewfinder and LCD. To conserve power, the viewfinder and LCD will not display at the same time. To use the viewfinder, the LCD must be closed. 6. If the issue is not resolved, reset the camcorder to factory specifications. NOTE: If the issue is still unresolved after completing the troubleshooting steps, service may be required .
If camcorder shows old recorded tapes picture with correct colors in LCD but does not show live view in camera mode to record new movie then its ccd imager chip failure.
And if camcoder shows live view and old recorded tapes in its eye piece view finder but does not show any thing in LCD the its problem of broekn/ cracked flexible wire between lcd board and main board of camcorder.
Let me know your finding with bit detail to provide you solution/ helpful info.
Most cameras and video recorders now display picture either through the viewfinder or the LCD screen.
Your camera model allows the same. Although if you turn the lcd screen towards the subject (screen faces the same direction as the lens) then the viewfinder switches on.
