this printer is experiencing what is known as a formatter/scanner assembly failure, hp has a service note issued to service printer up to 2 years after the purchase date.
Try doing a hard or reset or nvram:
1. Turn the printer off
2. Hold down the right arrow and the cancel button
3. Reboot the printer while holding the buttons and hold until permanent storage is displayed. Let go of the buttons and wait for the ready message on the display.
if this does not work contact hp. 1800-334-5144 in order for them to create a case under the service note and have the printer serviced. Both the scanner assembly and formatter board need to be replaced.
