The tv powers on then after about 2 minutes shuts off and the standby flashes red 5 times.
Try to force on the tv un plug and use remote when tv iv completly off. and press display 5 vol+ then power and see if tv stays on and in service menu look for eror code .if tv stays on if it cutts off then one of lamp in screen is defective. its mean screen defective

went home @ lunch to try it. this code didn't woork for my KDL-40S4100, but I found that the service menu code left,right,mute,center button,mute,menu did. But I didn't see any error codes before it shut off. any other suggestions? right when it does shut off I hear a relay Click if that helps.. Thanks!
try to disconnect tcon board and see if tv stays on if it does then tcon board defective its on back of the lcd screen

Hi, If all else fails, try do a hard reset. You can verify from your manual, but in some units, this is merely unplugging the unit from mains for a couple of hours. Try again, if it still shows error codes (blinking lights) you probably have to seek the services of a qualified professional. Hope this be of some help/idea. Good luck and kind regards.

Unfortunately, this is a failure of the balancer board for the backlight. The unfortunate part is that the balancer is not available by itself anymore, and the whole panel must be replaced, as Sony only has the balancers attached to new panels. You can contact Sony directly to ask for assistance, and it usually helps.

Sounds Lamp is weak in this TV.

The most likely the TV has a power supply related problem. The most common thing to go out is the circuit board that supply power to the screen. Commonly called a Backlight Inverter Board.
I can't say it's 100% the problem because I can't actually look at the tv over the internet.
If by chance the TV is still under warranty, go that route.
If not under warranty and If you have some electronic experience, you can purchase a Service Manual over the internet and diagnose the source of the problem and fix it by soldering in the new part. The Service Manual will give you circuit diagrams, test points, and part# lists. Usually, cost under $20.

I noticed the last 3 power cycles that it shuts off and the whole screen turns bright grey and looks like it has black streaks then clicks off..
