I have a second hand Elna Lock L1 which has been working fine for a year and all of a sudden my needle broke and I have replaced it with a normal machine needle. It doesn't seem to keep the thread chain. The only thing I can think of that is wrong with it is the wrong needle. It overlocks a little bit then nothing. I am not even sure which machine needle to buy for it as I don't have the manual. Does anyone know where I can get a free manual or how to fix?
For a manual try elna customer service
as for the needle, check to see if it's inserted correctly in the needle holder
the needle must be pushed all the way up into the needle holder--
the flat side goes to the back side of the machine
you also mentioned that you broke a needle, when a needle is broken some times it can cause the machine to go out of time, which means it has to be taken to a sewing machine repair shop & be retimed,,
and it needs to be serviced.
SOURCE: Hi, I am unable to do a overlock stitch , elna l1
Check with sewusa for a threading guide and manual.
Look inside the font door of the machine to see if there is a threading guide.

Sounds like the timing is a little out.
If you remove the needle plate and turn the handwheel manually watch for the lower looper as it swings behind the Left needle....the needles ought to rise by only about 2mm before the looper passes......the looper must pass the needle above the eye to catch the thread, and be so close as to be barely touching the rear of the needles......if the left needle thread is not picked up, it may be the timing, or the distance between needle and looper.
For the uninitiated, there are a myriad of variables in correctly timing an overlocker (serger), and without the manual to refer to the correct parameters, you will rapidly descend down a road of despair....if you move a looper to advance or ****** the timing, you risk looper collision and a broken looper is almost as much as a service, so my advice is do the test to see if the timing is the likely culprit, and if so, take the opportunity to give the old girl a treat.
If you need to save for a while to do it, just use the 3 thread option for the time being.

If this model came with several variants, the manual or diagram will cover all the various models in the range
In broad strokes, and without knowing this machine, the looper thread goes "south" around several thread guides then "west" towards the left side of the looper, finally "east" ....to complete the looper threading. (ALWAYS do this one first !!)....this is the thread feeding from the bottom.
The needle thread will go "west" and through a guide that has an enclosed moving arm (to pull the thread in the same way as the take-up arm on a sewing machine) before descending to the needle....
If you still have trouble, can you post a photo, I cannot find one from a google search ?

SOURCE: thread wont overlock
When the thread breaks too often, try these, that goes for all sewing machines
1. Replace the needles,
2. Loosen slightly the tension of the needle threads.
3. The top threads are to thin,
4.The sewing (rotary) hook or looper, has burs,
5. Wrong threading
SOURCE: my huskylock430 is threaded but it will not
if its not overlocking its not threaded right, but if the needle is bent at all it needs to be replaced and can cause stich malfunction or a piece of needle to fly randomly when it fully breaks! you can download the threading diagram if you google your machine... good luck
