Screen becomes jumbled when computer base is handled

My 450sx4 laptop is having problems with its screen becoming jumbled. The computer runs fine when I place it on a flat desktop. However, when handling it by the base, a bunch of lines/colored squares jumble the screen. If I bend the computer base with my hands, the monitor becomes more or less jumbled. This led me to think that there may be an unsecure connection in the hardware, or the motherboard isn't being properly secured. I tightened the motherboard screws but that didn't seem to help. Also, I connected the laptop to a CRT monitor and got these same results, so there isn't a problem in the connection with the lcd. Thanks in advance for your help!

I've talked to Gateway's tech support online about this and another issue. They tend to ask customers to send the product in for repair, but the repair cost are too much to be worthwhile. I am the do-it-yourself type when it comes to hardware anyway.

I'm not as familiar with laptop parts as pc's. Do they tend to have video hardware built into the motherboard itself? I can't identify any detachable hardware that could be a graphics card (though I haven't seen the reverse side of the motherboard yet).

It could possibly be the video card, I don't know that much about how hardware is laid out in that model, whether it is an built in card or a connected one so I cannot give you any trouble shooting tips. Do you still have tech support available with Gateway?

This article deals with text overlapping on Mac OS X, where text in web pages, text boxes or e-mail messages becomes jumbled. The problem may be caused by duplicate fonts. To fix it:

  1. In the Applications Folder, open Font Book
  2. In the "Collection" column, select "Computer"
  3. All duplicates will have a bullet after them. Use the command key to select all of the fonts with duplicates
  4. Choose Edit -> Resolve duplicates
  5. Restart Firefox/Thunderbird/whatever

I have Acer 4710 laptop. 1. The screen becomes white during start up or when computer is left without usage for some time. 2. Also, sometimes, split screen come suring startup itself and booting...

It maybe one of three things:

1) Bad windows installation. IF you ONLY see this problem during the time you work with windows and NEVER during bios boot up process it could be your Windows installation but I doubt it. It is most likely a hardware problem:

2 a) The hinges of your laptop are becoming bad and there is a short in the wires that carry the video signal up to the screen

2 b) the video card of your laptop is failing.

I bought this on clearance. I hooked it up and

Samsung LN40A550 LCD TV

This is probably the LCD Controller (T-CON) board connections. This is a small board with 2 flat cables connected to it which run to the LCD screen. The connections with the flat ribbons needs to be reseated. The heat makes the connections misaligned. This board is usually covered by a metal shield.
When you reseat the connections, run the set for 15 minutes to see if it works before replacing the back cover. You may have to reseat it again.
Remember, handle electronics boards by the edges, no static electricity, and do not touch the connection contacts.
At worst you would need a new board. (Shopjimmy.com has it for ~$90.00usd)

The screen on my laptop computer has become dark. If I shine a light on the screen I can barely see the display and if I connect an external monitor to the computer I get a display on the remote monitor....

The LCD display connection is loose. Try reconnecting this and the display will be fine. The connection should be at the top of the base right above the keyboard under the plastics.

450sx4 gateway laptop troubleshooting.

Does it do this when it's running on just the battery with no AC ,or does it only do it when running on ac adapter ? If it only behaves this way when using the ac adapter, then the ac adapter is bad.
Can you hear your fan running in your laptop ? If not, your processor may be overheating(which would also cause problems like this).
However,If it behaves this way when running only on battery, then I would think you need to replace one or more of your memory chips (DIMM'S).
