When idle or if computer turned off, monitor turns black and although light is green, monitor flashes on momentarily then turns black again

I have the same issue also, my father in law took it apart and didn't see any bad solders. But once it get s a little warm after a minute or two it automatically shut off with the green light still showing. I can hit the power button to turn it back on, then it will stay on for about 2 seconds then go back the the black screen, like it's in sleep mode. Any help would be appreciated!

Same problem, mine goes to sleep, I was able to keep it on log enough to reset, this was quite a trick I had 11 seconds to push the right sequence of buttons, now I get the screen to come on and it mirrors my laptop, but after 10 seconds goes black with power indicator light on "green", this seems to be a common problem, I cant believe there is no solution.

Im having the same problem. It happened over a year ago. I figured our monitor was just bad and settled for a small crt monitor. Now reading this im very angry at HP and compaq because they gave us such cheap monitors

Same Problem - Turn on computer and it flashes for about 1/2 second, the restarts. Took picture when on and the monitor says that it is "adjusting" but it still does not stay on. If this is the quality HP sells, they won't have much repeat business for very long. I will never buy another computer from them.

Usually this is a capacitor problem as the electrolyte has broken down and they are not holding as much charge. Look for bulging capacitors and replace them with new ones. They are usually found in sets and are bout 2cm high. the Big capacitor and tiny ones are unlikely to be the issue here.

Saw this happen on a monitor before, opened it up, found cold solder joints (where the component leads were not soldered very well to the circuit board), fired my solder gun up, resoldered every suspicious looking joint and presto! Been working fine for over a year now. :-)

Hi,.. I was given a compaq FP 7317 with the tower, key board,...monitor keeps saying "going to sleep" when I finally got it all pluged in. HELP. HOW TO GET OUT OF GOING TO SLEEP?

To disable sleep mode in vista follow the steps

Go to start and type in the search box Power Options hit the enter button
On the Left side there is a panel Click Change when the computer sleeps
Click the drop-down box which says Put the computer to sleep and select Never
Click Save changes

I turn my screen on and after 15 seconds it turns off but the green power light is still on

Try holding a flashlight (or other very bright light) an inch or two away from the screen while it's on. If you can see your background very faintly, then the backlighting of your monitor has gone out.
There are a lot of tutorials on how to replace backlighting (like this one: ) or you can just buy a new monitor.
If you can't see anything with the flashlight, then it might be a bad capacitor, which is usually about the same in cost and labor as a new monitor.

My screen goes black occasionally. I unplug it

There could be some faulty capacitors on the inverter board which are buldging or leaky.

My monitor keeps turning on and off automatically,...

Guest, Unit not turning "off"!!! Power supply (internal) going into "shutdown" mode.??? Have you been to this site to do some reading!!! It still a good read even after 5 years!!! Still up to this year 2010. Go here Remember this! Your monitor isn't any different than any other brand of "cold-cathode-fluorescent-lamp-back-lit lcd monitor in it's basic design and operation! There are seven pages of stuff at the above leslie wong blog. Hope this was of some help. Your monitor may also need new CCFL tubes due to age of unit

Monitor turns on and screen comes up for about 1 second and then turns black. Green power light stays on and green

This will be a fault with the inverter section that powers the ccfl lights usually a transistor or an i.c replaced will cure the problem

Sounds like you need to re-install your sound drivers.
