Soggy Pucks & Portafilter retains water Saeco Via Veneto

I own a Saeco Via Veneto I have owned it for a little over five months Lately, my espresso tastes lifeless. I have my espresso preground because I do not have a conical burr grinder. I store my espresso in a cool dark place, if I have it for than a week and a half I store it in the refrigerator. I have spoken with many Saeco reps, and Cafe West dist. reps, but none of them can pinpoint the problem. They claim that it may be the grind, or that the machine needs to be descaled. I doubt it is the grind because the grind I use has not changed and the espresso pucks used to come out tight and dry. I did descale the machine, but this has not helped. If it is not the grind, machine, or portafilter what is left? I would really appreciate any input becaue the machine is about to be out of warranty Thanks for any advice that is given

It sounds like you are short on water due to a blockage somewhere...either in the flowmeter or the group head. You might also have a faulty pump, and you're not getting enough pressure during the shot. If you're not getting crema, then it's most likely pressure related...shots will also have a burnt smell and very bitter taste.

SOURCE: No water coming through portafilter to make espresso.

You have a stuck check valve. Try running the pump with the steam knob open, then shutting it then, opening it 4 or 5 times and see if it will pop open. Make sure that you don't have the portafilter in at the time you are doing this.

Frothing works perfect....water is extracted just fine. BUT when I put coffee in the basket and tamp it down and put it in the machine it just makes noise like it is about to drip and nothing comes out,...

I have a brand new Via that never worked right out of the box. Could barely get any espresso to come through the portafilter. Got a new portafilter and the espresso now flies out of the machine beautifully. Seems they are shipping2_bing.gif units with faulty portafilter. Bad news is a new portafilter is like $65. See if you can get them to give you a new one. I had the same issue as you, very little espessso comes out.

Coffee not pouring through portafilter

if your grounds are tamped down too tight, the steam can't get through it.

Via Veneto will not prime

Yes, unfortunately the Via Veneto is a difficult machine to prime, however, I have a simple way to prime the pump if you run into this problem. Simply remove the water tank, fill a clean turkey baster with water, open the steam valve fully then mate the baster tip with the water tank flow valve on the espresso machine. Wrap a towel or paper towel around the flow valve/baster tip then inject the water (agressively, but not forcefully). It's works for me every time.
