My rio used to say upgrator and now its not turning on at all.
(please read everything there might be valuable information hidden somewhere Thanks!)
Ok heres the scoop my Rio player worked fine for about a year or so maybe even less. Just a month ago i had it plugged into my computer and i left it there for a long time...maybe a day or so. Ok when i took it off the cord i tried to turn it on a day later and it was stuck on the RIO start-up logo. One thing i noticed was that usually when i turned my Rio on it had the logo then on the bottom in small print it would say ce2100 then it would say loading your settings.....
when i tried to turn it on it only had the logo and was stuck on the logo for a long time. Then i tried holding down the On buttom multiple times and an hour later it started to turn off then turn on the the Rio logo multiple times by it self. Then after it stopped doing that it came to a blank screen with the word upgrator on the middle left side of the screen. And it was stuck like that, i couldn't turn it on or off. No matter how many times or how long i held the On button. Now when i plug my mp3 in it won't turn on at all. It won't show the connected and idle sign nothing. Just blank like a ran the battery out. Which i know i didn't because i always ran the battery out till it way empty then i would charge it so the battery shoul last longer that a little less than a year. I also tried the reset button....Nothing.
I hope this helps (good luck)
Re: My rio used to say upgrator and now its not turning...
I think when you hit the on/off power button (on top near outlet for headphones) AND hit the menu button (on side below volume dial) at same time...it puts the Rio CE2100 into "Upgrader" mode aka "Recovery" mode.
From what I've found online, basically, the firmware to the device is deleted. Trying to reinstall firmware, or reflash the device is nearly impossible. The tiny hole near the earphones is for resetting the device--use a needle (about the only thing that will fit-ouch)...but that only lets you turn it on/off if u get stuck. The tiny hole on face near display is where audio recording mic WOULD be if Rio CE2100 had one.
If ANYONE knows how to escape "Recovery mode" or "Upgrader" mode please share. This is a common final result for many owners of this otherwise great mp3 player.
There is some notation in online help site that says ce2100 requires 500mA from USB and says u can go to Device manager, check ur USB Root Hub, check Power tab to see how much power is being supplied to the device. Mine said 100mA, and doesn't work...but I don't know how to resolve this. =) Maybe tomorrow...or just wait for sales post-christmas. =)

I have not been on FixYa for about a 1/2 a year so as I seem to be the only person answering Rio problems I have only just seen your problem... Sorry, so if you haven't bought an iPod yet (or you want to try and fix this anyway) then I would recommend wiping and rebooting your player:
Windows only.... Please post if you are not using windows...
Open My Computer with your Rio plugged in. Right click on your Rio player and click on format. Leave the default values - if it asks you something then use your initiative. Then click on format. Then
when it has finished formatting go to your firmware (can be downloaded
from: http://www.digitalnetworksna.com/support/rio/product.asp?prodID=112). Follow the instructions and then it should load the firmware onto your player. When it has done then your player should (in theory!) work properly.
Ok, Connect your MP3 player to your PC then if the computer recognize it then I recommend a "Firmware Update".

Mac OS Version
If it doesn't work. Then there is a hardware problem in your Rio, maybe the BIOS ROM went bad.
I am sorry, but I cannot help you fix your mp3 player. The reason being I have the same model of Rio mp3 player, and the same exact problem. I can't figure out what to do, so I may just buy an ipod. They tend to have more solutions for their problems, if you know what I mean.
When Microsoft initiated the DRM system, any Rio Carbon that was hooked into Windows Media Player had the previously working files invalidated. Happened to me as well. The player lasted me three years, and that is about as long as any Mp3 player is going to last we are finding out b/c of all the software snafus.
first, and this is always good: If available, firmware for the Rio Carbon can be downloaded online.
Second, this might be the problem:
The Rio Carbon communicates with your computer differently in MTP mode than it does in MSC mode. When in MTP mode, the Rio Carbon cannot display hidden files in folders, cannot allow transfers to the root Rio Carbon directory, and cannot allow the creation of new folders. (Folders can be transferred to the Rio Carbon using drag-and-drop and copy-and-paste methods.) To use traditional folder options, change the Transfer Mode settings to put the Rio
Carbon in MSC mode.
"..Removing the Rio Carbon from a USB connection before Idle is displayed on the screen may result in a corrupting the player's file system.
If for any reason you suspect that your Rio player's file system has been corrupted, reformatting the player will restore the file system to its original state..."
