The relay mounts on the compressor and has a sliding start switch inside it. If you shake it you should feel the sliding switch within it. I fyou hear nothing or it sounds like a salt shake then it is bad. Newer relays have no way of telling other than you can visably see the relay is burned and can smell it as well. If your compressor is hot as the devil then the relay is stuck in start and both windings are going at once. This will cause the overload to trip and kill the compressor till it cools back down. otherwise the compressor will cool the box albeit intermittantly. If the contacts are disentergraded within the relay the compressor will not run.
