I've got a Compaq Presario 2113AP. It's been over-heating for a couple of years so it's been sitting elevated to help circulate air. However, it's also had the problem of not powering up even if there's normal external power. This would only happen if I had to restart the computer, or it didn't shut down properly. In most cases I've managed to get it up and running again via the reset button underneath. But no longer. There's no sound, and if I press the on button the little yellow light flashes 8 times really quickly then stops (the blue light continues to pulse slowly). The reset button does nothing. The last time it was used it was turned off nice and slowly. Is it really dead? And if so, how do I get the information from the hard-drive?
Okay, great, great question, thank you for the detail, good grammar, and certainly honesty as I can help you much more. The overheating is probably being caused by accumulated dust on the heatsink where the fan is and needs to be cleaned off to prevent it from overheating (sticking a can of airspray in there should do the trick). As far as not powering on, that is definitely a motherboard issue and may be related to the overheating problem. Doubtless, however, you will need to get a new motherboard. I suggest either www.preowned.com or ebay as they both have great prices for new motherboards. As far as recovering the data off the hard drive goes, the hard drive should be fairly easy to remove. They make a hard drive caddy that will convert it to two USB cables that you can hook up to any other computer as you would a removable flash drive and recover the files appropriately from there.
