The conector socket inside the Mitac mio 168 (PDA and GPS system badged as Navman) seems to have come loose and we can no longer charge it. Otherwise it seems to work fine. It is over three years old and no longer under warranty. What needs to be done about this? Suggestions for repairers would be welcome. We live in Brisbane Australia but are currently travelling in Northern NSW (Australia).

Buy the connector on the internet(its out there) and find some one with electronic repair savey and have them repair the unit for you. It's a better fix and won't cost you so much. I sent my unit to Mio and instead of just replacing the connector they replaced the whole main board + display. Sounds good but I have had problems with my SmartSt GPS program ever since. (Version problem) Can't get them to fix it.

My Mio 168 just won't charge

The socket on the bottom of these is a common failure point. It wobbles about until the solder cracks then the device won't charge. If you're confident with a soldering iron you might be able to fix it yourself. Remove the SD card and fold the GPS antenna down. Remove the four case screws and carefully separate the back by gently prying it along the join. Watch out for the cable to the GPS antenna. Now you should be able to see the 22-pin socket. The pins are tiny. Very carefully re-solder them, and the ends of the connector where they attach to the PCB. The YouTube video seems to illustrate it pretty well.

Alternatively, there's this option which is altogether more drastic:

I need to replace battery. Is it easy to get back off? Manual says I need to take it to repair shop

Basically to take any phone or pda apart, unscrew all screws and look for hidden screws under soft objects or labels etc.

ones all screws are out, use a small flat screwdriver or a case opener tool to carefully open the case of the phone or pda. it should snap open, very likely plastic holders on the corners that keep the case closed, carefully snap them open / off, don't break them.

I have Tomtom 5 Mitac Mio 168 Bundle, I can not charge it because there are some pins broken in the charger connection inside the handset.

If you cant put it in service , you can try to resolder only needed pins for charging. here is a link with pinout : http://pinouts.ru/PortableDevices/mitac_cable_pinout.shtml

Problem with gps not connecting.

From inside Tomtom, have you tried "change preferences" then scroll through to "show GPS status" then "configure" select "Other Cable NMEA GPS" select "Done" for GPS baud rate of 4800. Now select "Serial Cable on SP2 and then "Done"
Hope it helps. Philpot
