Question about M-Audio Firewire Solo Audio Input

M-audio firewire solo

I am having problems getting a new M-Audio Firewire Solo to work on my Mac Powerbook (12" aluminum) 1Ghz 80 gig harddrive, 765 ram. I am running the latest OSX software. I loaded the incleded CD drivers onto the Mac and then shut down. I then attached the firewire cables and restarted. The M-audio showed the unit was getting power but the Mac kept posting that no M-Audio device was attached. I uninstalled the software and reinstalled, changed firewire cable and did the whole thing several times, with and without the power adapter. Always the same error message. I am wondering if the unit or the software is defective as I cannot tell what, if anything I am doing wrong. Thanks for your help in solving this problem. Jim

I just bought the Firewire Solo and had the same issue with my MacBook. I have OSX 10.5.6. The drivers that came on the CD were for earlier OSX version. If you go to M-Audio's website (www.m-audio.com) and then click on Support. Go to to drivers & updates, search by the criteria they give you for your specific system and then download. Although they don't currently have an updated version for 10.5.6, I downloaded 10.5.5 and it seems to be working, although I'm running into an audio input problem when hooking up mic and guitar....no sound. I'm thinking I'll just have to wait until M-Audio comes out for an updated version for 10.5.6. Hope this helps.

It says that fire wire solo is not compatible with my current version of windows when i try to install the drivers. i am using windows vista.

Vista had notable incompatibilities with lots of things. I would think that the manufacturer might have provided updated drivers. Have you contacted the manufacturer or visited the site to see if there were updated drivers available.
If my guess is correct, this device worked OK in XP.

I want to connect to my PowerBook G4. Have the unit. Where is my firewire port?

On your Behringer Sound Sytem, the firewire port is at the back, the firewire ports are actually labeled. On the PowerBook G4, it is usually located right next to the ethernet port and it has like the Y symbol above it.

Sounds like the device is not set as the default.

Step 1. Right click on the Speaker icon in your taskbar (lower right of your Windows Desktop)

Step 2. Click Properties and then find Playback devices and make sure that your device is selected.

( iam operating off of Windows 7 so my steps may be off a bit)

Another waterlogged 12" PowerBook story

Sounds like you have done all you can. The hard drive should be ok and still work in an external case so you can transfer the data to a new machine. Good luck!

Connecting another Mac to a laptop

Connect the 2 with a firewire cable. Reboot the Mac you want to read from & hold the T key down while it boots up. A large firewire symbol shows on the screen indicating FireWire Target Mode. The other Mac should be showing up as a firewire drive on the other Mac.

Yes you can, but most likely it will not work (you have to format it and install fresh copy of Windows (or Linux)).

There is a crackling sound after I record.

The problem was the VIA chipset firewire card. I changed it with a Texas Instruments one. Works perfectly now.
