Question about iRiver T10 MP3 Player
Try to re-format it. on player go to settings, then advanced then format. select format, say yes and it should reboot. if that doesn't work you need to upgrade the firmware. got to iriveramerica.com, support, ultra portabale support and download firmware updater software. Not a bad idea to upgrade firmware in either case. Your music will be lost when you format but you can simply re-load it from your music manager on your PC.

I go to control panel .... format .... set the T10 to Fat32 and hit format.... re-load music... no problem

Clicking "Format" does cause a reboot, but after that the original problem is still there. ("File Check Erroe" when powered on without USB. Or "Creating DB" when connected to PC via USB cable, and the PC doesn't see the iRiver.)
Is there any keypress combination that takes it to a more powerful "restore" mode?

This sounds like a drive error.
Try right clicking the drive in windows explorer then properties>tools>error checking>check now and tick both boxes and then start.
