well my answer is as informative as your question lol. if you are hamdy with a soldering iron maybe u can fix it, other than that not much u can do dude.

Well, somehow the solid tab at the top of the port is gone, not in any stick and the prongs are bent...having never forced anything into the port. I did however hope to get some answer as to where I may search online to purchase one that may replace the original in the back of my laptop...but thank you for your insight.

i wouldsuggest try ebay for broken model like yours, or perhaps an elect store like jaycar or radio shack for a generic port that u can solder in. either way itxs gunna be a fairly involved job. unless u can find that bit of plastic (make one?) and glue it back in the port. no glue on the contact surface of the pins :p

Could be disabled in the bios, or the usb went out on the motherboard itself.

HP Desktop Modem broken ethernet port

Try to load the latest driver, you can get that from HP under your computer. If that does not fix it then go buy a cheap USB Ethernet adaptor from Amazon or BestBuy, plug it in to a spare USB port and follow the directions for the adaptor with your Ethernet cable plugged into the new adaptor.

That is it, you have bypassed the bad Ethernet power and can forget about it (they can't be fixed), you should be good to go.

If you don't want to try the driver, then just get a new adaptor and that will bypass the internal adaptor.

Good Luck

Where can I get a replacement for my 2 front usb ports on my optiplex 760..they are not working??

I've never seen 2 front USB ports that were bad. I've seen 1 that was defective because the USB device that was plugged into it was broken off. However in that case it caused the power supply to short out and prevent the computer from powering on. Here is a link to your model:
ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_optiplex_desktop/optiplex-760_Service%20Manual_en-us.pdf
If the USB ports on the back of your computer work then the front ones should too unless there is a connector dislodged to motherboard. All USB ports use the same circuit.

The USB port is likely broken for good. However, you can buy USB hubs like this one that take one USB port and splits it into four. They're also really cheap, that one being around $3.

Also, if you only need two USB ports, there is a third one in the back of your console, right above the network port.

I'm having compaq presario MV540. I'm facing certain problems using it which are as follows:- 1. As sooon as i swith on my computer my dvd rom automatically comes out and goes in without giving any...

As far as the cd drive goes, get that replaced cause with the door closing and shuttin on its on, it could broken pieces of debris in there thats causing it to do that or the board inside of the cd drive is broken so either way replacing that would solve that issue.

As far as the USB ports are concerned, try hooking up other USB devices such as a USB keyboard, USB Mouse, flashdrive. Try other things to see if you get the same thing, if you do then that means the motherboard is bad cause all of those ports connect to the motherboard.

As an alternative solution to try, if you don't have anything important to save off of the hard drive, you can restore your computer back to factory defaults and then try the usb ports again and if they still dont' work then you know for sure the motherboard is bad. At that point you can replace the motherboard or find a USB card that plugs into one of the PCI slots. That would give you other usb ports to try.

UBS port won't allow my memory stick to go in is there a lock on it???

Hello !

Be certain you are trying a USB port. It is rectangular in shape. The USB memory stick will only go in one way. Try flipping it over.

If still a problem ...

Either your USB memory stick is bad or your USB port on your notebook is bad.

Try another memory stick or try a different USB port on your notebook - should determine which is OK and which is bad.

Hope this helps.

I added a 512mb stick to my ibm t30 think pad and one port is bad

You can plug a USB hub into the working USB port on the computer. The USB hub can have several ports so you can plug in several USB devices.
I suggest you get a powered USB hub because if all the devices that you plug into this hub exceeds 500mA then your computer's USB port will stop working because it could not supply enough current.
You will not need to plug in the power adapter into the hub if the device/s do not overload the computer's USB port.

Usb ports do not active

One of the great features of USB devices is they can get power from the USB port. Plug in a thumb drive and it just works. The power for operating the thumb drive comes from the USB port. This works for small devices like a thumb drive but not something big like a scanner. The scanner need its own power supply.

There could be several explinations for what you are seeing. Could be you are plugging in a device which is sucking too much power and the laptop is shutting it down. I would test the port with something small like a thumb drive and see if it works. If the thumb drive works but the other device does not a couple of things could be going on. Maybe the device just need power - is there a way to plug in a power supply? Or maybe the device is broken and shorted out. Does the device work on another computer?

If something like a thumb drive does not work then it is a problem with the motherboard. Could be the USB ports are bad. It happens and there usually is no easy fix short or replacing the motherboard ($$$). Occasionally there is a BIOS setting for the USB ports. A bit of a long shot but worth a look.

A possible work around would be to get a power USB hub. A hub plugs into a USB port and provides 4 or 7 USB ports. Good ones come with a power supply. When the hub is plugged into the power supply it does not draw power from the computer. Might solve your problem.

Good luck!
